چکیده

Peaked density profiles may not only improve confinement properties, but also give the additional benefits of increased fusion production and ignition margin in BPX, as shown in Fig. 8.1. The ability to control density profiles in the core and scrape-off regions is governed by a number of both physics and operational considerations that make it difficult to specify optimized fueling systems. For this reason, the fueling systems for BPX are designed to maximize flexibility, allowing operation to determine optimal scenarios. After listing some of the issues impacting fueling assessments, we present the latest information on pellet ablation and penetration and then give example fueling scenarios. Some degree of external control over the density profile in the core can be achieved through pellet injection, but recycle and other plasma edge physics limit the degree of control that is possible. Passive pumping and fueling by the walls, limiters, and other structures (collectively called fuel recycle) is a function of the temperature of the surface, incident particle energy, and history of the fluence.’ In H-mode operation, diffusive losses are sharply reduced at the separatrix, and the lower scrape-off density allows better penetration of neu-

Parametric Excitation of Low Frequency Waves in ICRF-Produced Plasmas on GAMMA 10

In high power ICRF experiments on the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror, plasmas with a strong temperature anisotropy are produced when the cyclotron resonance layer exists near the midplane of the central cell. Saturation of the diamagnetism is sometimes observed when the heating ICRF power is increased. In the plasmas with the strong temperature anisotropy, Alfvén-ion-cyclotron (AIC) modes are spontaneo...

Vi. Icrf Heating

Radio-frequency (RF) power in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) has been chosen as the primary auxiliary heating technique for BPX. This decision is based on the wide success of ICRF heating in existing large-scale experiments (JET, TFTR, JT-60), the capability of ion cyclotron waves to penetrate the high-density plasmas of BPX, the ability to concentrate ICRF power deposition near ...

Expanding the operating space of ICRF on JET with a view to ITER

This paper reports on ITER-relevant ICRF physics investigated on JET in 2003 and early 2004. Minority heating of helium three in hydrogen plasmas (He)H was systematically explored by varying the He concentration and the toroidal phasing of the antenna arrays. The best heating performance (a maximum electron temperature of 6.2keV with 5MW of ICRF power) was obtained with a preferential wave laun...

Velocity Distribution of Fast Ions Generated by ICRF Heating in Heliotron J

Fast ion velocity distribution is investigated using ICRF minority heating in Heliotron J with special emphasis on the effect of the toroidal ripple of magnetic field strength. The effect of the magnetic configuration on the fast ion confinement is one of the most important issues in helical devices. Here, the pitch angle dependences of energy spectra for three bumpy cases are measured for the ...

Central Impurity Toroidal Rotation in ICRF Heated Alcator C-Mod Plasmas

Central impurity toroidal rotation has been observed in Alcator C-Mod ICRF heated plasmas, from the Doppler shifts of argon x-ray lines. Rotation velocities up to 1.3 10 m/s in the co-current direction have been observed in H-mode discharges that had no direct momentum input. There is a strong correlation between the increase in the central impurity rotation velocity and the increase in the pla...

Electron Heating by ICRF Mode-Conversion Heating in LHD

Electron heating regime using with radio-frequency waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) has been investigated in helical magnetic configuration. Mode-conversion scenario was applied to the LHD plasmas. When the wave frequency is change to be lower than that in the standard ICRF heating (minority ion heating) condition, the resonance layers are moved away to the peripheral regi...
