Problems in the Geometry of Submanifolds

چکیده
This article grew out of several talks that the author presented at the Banach Institute and at the University of Bialystok in Poland during November of 2001. It describes six problems from the geometry of submanifolds. Some of the problems come from the theory of constant curvature submanifolds in Euclidean space, as well as applications of Morse theory of the height function to the problem of relating curvature and topology of submanifolds in Euclidean space. Others come from infinitedimensional Morse theory of minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds.

Extrinsic sphere and totally umbilical submanifolds in Finsler spaces
Based on a definition for circle in Finsler space, recently proposed by one of the present authors and Z. Shen, a natural definition of extrinsic sphere in Finsler geometry is given and it is shown that a connected submanifold of a Finsler manifold is totally umbilical and has non-zero parallel mean curvature vector field, if and only if its circles coincide with circles of the ambient...
متن کاملSignature submanifolds for some equivalence problems
This article concerned on the study of signature submanifolds for curves under Lie group actions SE(2), SA(2) and for surfaces under SE(3). Signature submanifold is a regular submanifold which its coordinate components are differential invariants of an associated manifold under Lie group action, and therefore signature submanifold is a key for solving equivalence problems.
متن کاملComplete Embedded Minimal N-submanifolds in C
A classical problem in the theory of minimal submanifolds of Euclidean spaces is to study the existence of a minimal submanifold with a prescribed behavior at infinity, or to determine from the asymptotes the geometry of the whole submanifold. Beyond the intrinsic interest of these questions, they are also of crucial importance when studying the possible singularities of minimal submanifolds in...
متن کاملOpen Problems in Geometry of Curves and Surfaces
We collect dozens of well-known and not so well-known fundamental unsolved problems involving low dimensional submanifolds of Euclidean space. The list includes selections from differential geometry, Riemannian geometry, metric geometry, discrete or polyhedral geometry, geometric knot theory, theory of convex bodies, and integral geometry. The common thread through these selections are the simp...
