چکیده

The advances in network technology and the growth of the Internet together with upcoming new applications like peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have led to an exponential growth of the stored data volume. The key to manage this data explosion seems to be the consolidation of storage systems inside storage area networks (SANs) and the use of a storage virtualization solution that is able to abstract from the underlying physical storage system. In this paper we present the first measurements on an out-of-band storage virtualization system and investigate its performance and scalability compared to a plain SAN. We show in general that a carefully designed out-of-band solution has only a very minor impact on the CPU usage in the connected servers and that the metadata management can be efficiently handled. Furthermore we show that the use of an adaptive data placement scheme in our virtualization solution V:Drive can significantly enhance the throughput of the storage systems, especially in environments with random access schemes.

Improving storage performance with bcache in a virtualization scenario

The development of hard disk technology has not kept up with the general speed-up of computers and modern day technological developments like virtualization and cloud deployment. Flash storage, on the contrary, improves access speed and bandwidth significantly but at comparably higher costs. As in most scenarios only a fraction of the actual data stored on disk is ever used in arbitrary operati...

Design and Implementation of an Out-of-Band Virtualization System on Solaris 10

In out-of-band virtualization systems, it is typical that the virtual storage manager (VSM) maintains the metadata for all Agents and performs the address mapping. The Agent performs I/O access according to the mapped address. High network latency, poor performance and low scalability are the main problems of this method. This article introduces an improved design and implementation of an out-o...

Design and Implementation of a SAN Agent for Windows NT Architecture

In an out-of-band SAN virtualization system, the virtualization appliance maintains metadata, and the agents inside the kernel of servers use that data to supply virtual storage devices and to perform the mapping of I/O address. A design of an out-of-band SAN virtualization system based on Windows NT volume manager driver, and its underlining technologies were presented in this paper. It shows ...

MagicStore: A New Out-of-Band Virtualization System in SAN Environments

In this paper, MagicStore, a new out-of-band virtualization system designed for SAN environments is proposed. Online multiplication of the components in a striped volume can help enhance both the I/O performance and storage capacity of a system, but it requires online redistribution of the data on the volume. MagicStore employs a new mapping management solution based on a sliding window to supp...

DRIVING OPTIMUM TRADE-OFF BETWEEN THE BENEFITS AND COSTS OF INTERBASIN WATER TRANSFER PROJECTS

The interbasin water transfer is a remedy to mitigate the negative issues of water shortage in arid and semi-arid regions. In  a water transfer project  the receiving basin always  benefits while, the sending basin may suffer. In this study, the project of interbasin water transfer from Dez water resources system in south-west of Iran to the central part of the contrary is  investigated during...
