چکیده

The IEEE 802.14 working group is currently standardizing a new media access control (MAC) protocol for the emerging Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks. Crucial for the success of 802.14 will be its ability to support higher layer tra c services, namely, ATM Constant Bit Rate (CBR), Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and Available Bit Rate (ABR) tra c classes. In this study, we investigate the inter-operation of the MAC protocol, de ned by 802.14, with ABR transmissions. An important nding of our study is that the bandwidth contention on the upstream channel in the HFC network may interfere with the feedback congestion control mechanisms of ABR tra c control. This interference can result in unfairness between ABR sources, and decreased utilization of the upstream HFC channel. As a solution to the problem we propose a scheme whereby the headend station of the HFC network returns congestion information contained in resource management (RM) cells to the ABR sources. The proposed mechanism can be incorporated into the ABR rate control scheme without modifying the current tra c management speci cations. Numerous simulation scenarios are presented to illustrate our ndings. Parts of the results have been presented to the IEEE 802.14 standardization committee.

CBR Channels on a DQRAP-based HFC Network

DQRAP (Distributed Queueing Random Access Protocol), is a multiple access protocol that offers a throughput equal to the offered traffic up to a load of one with a lesser delay than any other multiple access protocol. DQRAP utilizes three control minislots and two distributed queues: transmission and collision resolution, to provide this performance for all values of "a", i.e., the size of the ...

Video distribution with edge stations and Wi-Fi delivery networks

A video distribution architecture with edge stations and WiFi delivery networks as connection to residential homes is described in this paper. An edge station is configurable and controllable by a central server. It is placed in the access point of Wi-Fi networks and has multiple usages. Due to its large storage space it can be used as a mirroring/caching proxy for continuous media. Replicating...

A Comparative Study: Offering Multi-Service of the Generic Broadband Residential Access Techniques

Nowadays, the broadband residential access infrastructure remains one of the major research areas for NGN (next generation network). Apart from popular ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber loop), HFC (hybrid fiber-coax) and APON (ATM passive optical network), academic communities and industry are increasingly showing great concern about Ethernet technique in the subscriber access network. This...
