چکیده

In this paper we analyze the limitations of current recommendations of the INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) Directive as far as the temporal metadata definition for discovery purposes, and propose its extension so as to allow the representation and management of imperfect spatiotemporal metadata. We propose to extend the metadata in order to cope with the requirements of both metadata producers, who often are unable to specify precise values, and users who submit queries to catalog services for discovering interesting data, who may express soft selection conditions on metadata values. The proposal is illustrated and explained through an example taken from an active Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). Keywords— Geo-data, INSPIRE, metadata, Spatial Data Infrastructure, spatio-temporal imperfection.

Development and Deployment of a Services Catalog in Compliance with the INSPIRE Metadata Implementing Rules

In order to facilitate the availability of and access to spatial data, Spatial Data Infrastructures must set up a series of services to be reused by their community of users in the construction of different applications and value-added services. One of the key elements to exploit the resources provided by these infrastructures is to facilitate a catalog of services describing the features of th...

Extending INSPIRE Metadata to imperfect temporal descriptions

When looking for geodata in a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), the user expresses precise selection conditions on the values of metadata in discovery services. In order to obtain a list of results, corresponding values of metadata must exactly match such conditions. This practice suffers from several drawbacks. First of all, with respect to the temporal characterization, available recommendat...

Enhancing Spatial Data Infrastructures with Semantic Web Technologies

Methods that were developed in support of applications for the Semantic Web are used to enhance information discovery services in a Spatial Data Infrastructure. A standard Catalog Service is thus enabled to resolve queries of the type “concept @ location in time” through the automatic evaluation of metadata formalizing the conceptual, spatial, and temporal semantics of geodata. A prototype of t...

Geological applications using geospatial standards - an example from OneGeology-Europe and GeoSciML

GeoSciML has been developed to enable the interchange of geoscience information, principally that portrayed on geological maps as well as boreholes. A GeoSciML testbed was developed both to test the implementation of the data model and its application in web services. The OneGeology-Europe project aims to use the GeoSciML data model, and build on the experience of the GeoSciML testbed, in imple...

Open tools and services for INSPIRE related environmental data and metadata: reporting on experiences gained in GS SOIL

The main issue with environmental geographic data and their associated metadata is that they are often scattered across numerous data providers around the world or just within a country/federation (including the EU), and that there’s a large variability in the used formats and presentation/delivery methods, especially at the web service level. The EU INSPIRE directive aims at standardizing at l...
