Chromosomal abnormalities in severely malnourished Indian children.

چکیده
The frequencies of chromosomal aberrations in Giemsa-bar:ded preparations obtained from peripheral blood cultures of 5 kwashiorkor, 3 marasmic and 2 marasmickwashiorkor patients were investigated. Analysis of 1120 metaphases from these patients revealed an aberration rate of 5. 80 per cent as against a frequency of 1. 66 per cent seen in control children. However, no particular chromosome or chromosome group seems to be more affected in malnourished children. Furthermore, malnourished children with associated infections were observed to exhibit more number aberrations than those without infections. These observations thus, support the suggestion that malnourished children exhibit increased frequencies of chromosomal damage.

متن کاملIAP guidelines 2006 on hospital based management of severely malnourished children (adapted from the WHO Guidelines).
Malnutrition in children is widely prevalent in India. It is estimated that 57 million children are underweight (moderate and severe). More than 50% of deaths in 0-4 years are associated with malnutrition(1). The median case fatality rate is approximately 23.5% in severe malnutrition, reaching 50% in edematous malnutrition(2). There is a need for standardized protocol-based management to improv...
متن کاملFecal occult blood screening in children with severe malnutrition.
We screened 50 consecutive severely malnourished children for evidence of gastrointestinal tract blood loss. Malnutrition was graded as per WHO recommendations. Gastrointestinal blood loss was detected using fecal occult blood test (FOBT) kit. Thirty (60%) of the study population were documented to be FOBT positive. This simple and rapid test is recommended as a routine screening procedure amon...
متن کاملUrinary secretory IgA after nutritional rehabilitation.
We studied the secretory IgA (sIgA) response of the mucosal urinary tract of malnourished children before and after nutritional rehabilitation. sIgA concentration (mg/l) was determined by ELISA in 187 children aged 3 months to 5 years. The children, who frequented a day care center, were divided into four groups, according to nutritional status: 57 were eutrophic, 49 were undergrown, 57 were mo...
