چکیده

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, originally invented by Gallager in 1963, are now well-known for their good performances. Their convolutional counterpart was introduced by Felström and Zigangirov in 1999 and have already been shown to be able to achieve the Shannon capacity under low-complexity iterative decoding algorithms. In principle, the belief-propagation (BP) threshold of the convolutional or spatially-coupled LDPC code ensemble can be increased up to the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of the underlying uncoupled ensemble. In this write-up, we will focus on explaining this “threshold saturation” phenomenon for the binary erasure channel (BEC) in detail, and propose some future research plans.

Performance of Rateless Codes under Spatial Coupling

Spatial coupling of individual LDPC codes improves the BP threshold of the coupled ensemble to the MAP threshold of the underlying ensemble. In this report, we investigate the performance of spatial coupling on LDGM codes which might lead to constructing a new class of rateless codes. In what follows, we study Raptor codes as a class of rateless codes and investigate spatial coupling on LDPC en...

Spatially-Coupled Codes and Threshold Saturation on Intersymbol-Interference Channels

Recently, it has been observed that terminated low-density-parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes (or spatially-coupled codes) appear to approach capacity universally across the class of binary memoryless channels. This is facilitated by the “threshold saturation” effect whereby the belief-propagation (BP) threshold of the spatially-coupled ensemble is boosted to the maximum a-posteriori (MAP)...

A Phenomenological Study on Threshold Improvement via Spatial Coupling

Kudekar et al. proved an interesting result in low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes: The belief-propagation (BP) threshold is boosted to the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold by spatial coupling. Furthermore, the authors showed that the BP threshold for code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is improved up to the optimal one via spatial coupling. In this letter, a phenom...

Analysis of thresholds for braided block codes in BEC

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, invented by Gallager [2], who described and analyzed a block variant of the codes, arouse great interest of researchers. These codes are widely used in practice since they can be decoded by using relatively simple iterative decoding algorithms. Several modifications of these codes are known, in particular, generalized LDPC codes [3]. In contrast to Gallage...

Improving the Decoding Threshold of Tailbiting Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes by Energy Shaping

We show how the iterative decoding threshold of tailbiting spatially coupled (SC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles can be improved over the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel by allowing the use of different transmission energies for the codeword bits. We refer to the proposed approach as energy shaping. We focus on the special case where the transmission energy of...
