Circadian and Ultradian Rhythms Modulating the Sensory Processing

چکیده
The present review analyzes sensory processing during sleep and wakefulness from a single neuronal viewpoint. Our premises are that processing changes throughout the sleep– wakefulness cycle may be at least partially evidenced in single neurons by (a) changes in the discharge rate and firing pattern of the response to sound, (b) changes in the phase locking of the response to the hippocampal theta rhythm, and (c) changes in the effects of the neurotransmitters involved in the afferent and efferent pathways. 1. The concept that the neural network organization during sleep versus wakefulness is different and can be modulated by sensory signals and vice versa, and that the sensory input may be influenced by the CNS state, i.e., asleep or awake, is introduced. During sleep the evoked firing of auditory units increases, decreases, or remains similar to that

Estrous correlated modulations of circadian and ultradian wheel-running activity rhythms in LEW/Ztm rats.
Estrogen treatment alters the expression of ultradian activity rhythms in male and female LEW/Ztm rats. This finding raises the possibility that the expression of ultradian rhythms may vary on different days of the estrous cycle. To test this hypothesis, we recorded the circadian and ultradian wheel-running activity rhythms of entrained (LD 12:12) and free-running sexually mature LEW/Ztm female...
متن کاملControl of Rest:Activity by a Dopaminergic Ultradian Oscillator and the Circadian Clock
There is long-standing evidence for rhythms in locomotor activity, as well as various other aspects of physiology, with periods substantially shorter than 24 h in organisms ranging from fruit flies to humans. These ultradian oscillations, whose periods frequently fall between 2 and 6 h, are normally well integrated with circadian rhythms; however, they often lack the period stability and expres...
متن کاملSCN lesions abolish ultradian and circadian components of activity rhythms in LEW/Ztm rats.
A trimodal locomotor activity pattern has been observed in LEW/Ztm rats. Complete and partial lesions of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) were used to determine whether the same neural substrate may underlie the circadian rhythms and the ultradian modulation of wheel-running activity in these rats. Whereas sham lesions had little or no effect on the wheel-running activity pattern, complete SCN...
متن کاملDisruption of ultradian and circadian rhythms of blood pressure in nondipper hypertensive patients.
Ultradian rhythms in blood pressure (BP) are known to exist, but their modification in hypertension is largely unknown. The present study was undertaken to assess the integrity of ultradian and 24-hour BP rhythms in dipper (n=100) and nondipper (n=20) hypertensive patients compared with 44 dipper normotensive individuals. Fourier analysis was used to fit ultradian (12, 8, and 6 hour) and 24-hou...
متن کاملCircadian and Ultradian Rhythms of Free Glucocorticoid Hormone Are Highly Synchronized between the Blood, the Subcutaneous Tissue, and the Brain
Total glucocorticoid hormone levels in plasma of various species, including humans, follow a circadian rhythm that is made up from an underlying series of hormone pulses. In blood most of the glucocorticoid is bound to corticosteroid-binding globulin and albumin, resulting in low levels of free hormone. Although only the free fraction is biologically active, surprisingly little is known about t...
