چکیده

Recent research in image sensors has produced cameras with very large fields of view. A n area of computer vision research which will benefit f rom this technology is the computation of camera motion (ego-motion) from a sequence of images. Traditional cameras suffer from the problem that the direction of translation may lie outside of the field of view, making the computation of camera motion sensitive to noise. In this paper, we present a method for the recovery of ego-motion using omnidirectional cameras. Noting the relationship between spherical projection and wide-angle imaging devices, we propose mapping the image velocity vectors to a sphere, using the Jacobian of the transformation between the projection model of the camera and spherical projection. Once the velocity vectors are mapped to a sphere, we show how existing ego-motion algorithms can be applied and present some experimental results. These results demonstrate the ability to compute egomotion with omnidirectional cameras.

A Practical Toolbox for Calibrating Omnidirectional Cameras

An omnidirectional camera is a vision system providing a 360° panoramic view of the scene. Such an enhanced field of view can be achieved by either using catadioptric systems, which opportunely combine mirrors and conventional cameras, or employing purely dioptric fisheye lenses. Omnidirectional cameras can be classified into two classes, central and noncentral, depending on whether they satisf...

Diverging viewing-lines in binocular vision: A method for estimating ego motion by mounted active cameras

We exploit the framework of diverging viewing-lines where cameras do not share the common field of view, and propose a method for incrementally estimating ego motion using two mounted active cameras. Our method independently controls the two cameras so that each camera automatically fixates its optical axis to its own fixation point. This camera control allows diverging viewing-lines of the two...

Ego-Motion Estimation and Collision Detection for Omnidirectional Robots

We propose an algorithm to estimate the ego-motion of an omnidirectional robot based on a sequence of position estimates. Thereto, we derive a motion model for omnidirectional robots and an estimation procedure to fit the model to observed positions. Additionally, we show how we can benefit from the velocity estimates deriving an algorithm that recognizes situations in which a robot is blocked ...

A General Approach for Egomotion Estimation with Omnidirectional Images

Computing a camera’s ego-motion from an image sequence is easier to accomplish when a spherical retina is used, as opposed to a standard retinal plane. On a spherical field of view both the focus of expansion and contraction are visible, whereas for a planar retina that is not necessarily the case. Recent research has shown that omnidirectional systems can be used to emulate spherical retinas b...

Diss . Eth No . 17635 Omnidirectional Vision : from Calibration to Robot Motion Estimation

For mobile robots to be able to work with and for people and thus operate in our everyday environments, they need to be able to acquire knowledge through perception. In other words they need to collect sensor measure ments from which they extract meaningful information. This thesis covers some of the essential components of a robot perception system combining omnidirectional vision, odometry, ...
