Supplementary Appendix for Contests for Experimentation

چکیده
This section provides details for Section 4.4 of the paper. We consider the class of contests with intermittently-public information disclosure: the principal specifies a set of times at which the entire history of successes to date is publicly disclosed; at other times, there is no information disclosed. Formally, an intermittently-public disclosure policy is a sequence (Mt, μt)t∈[0,T ] where, for an arbitrary set T ⊆ [0, T ], Mt = O and μt(o) = o if t ∈ T , and |Mt| = 1 if t 6∈ T .1 Define a mixture contest (with switching time t) as one that implements public winner-takes-all (WTA) from time 0 to some time t ∈ [0, T ] and then hidden equal-sharing (ES) from time t to T .

Online Appendix – NOT FOR PUBLICATION
This Online Appendix is divided into six parts. Appendix A provides a general statement of strategies and equilibria, and describes how we do equilibrium selection when there are multiple equilibria. Appendix B proves Proposition 3. Appendix C proves verbal statements in the analysis of experimentation about the principal’s commitment problem and institutional solutions. Appendix D contains acc...

متن کاملCheating in Contests
Much of the interest in the study of sports from the perspective of an economist lies in the empirical application of contests as efficient mechanisms for eliciting effort. Contestants respond to contest incentives, and these incentives include the incentive to cheat. This paper discusses different forms of cheating: sabotage, doping, and match fixing. The paper discusses how these forms of che...

This appendix contains supplementary material for Livshits, MacGee, and Tertilt (2009). In particular, it provides further details on some of the data used, it discusses three additional potential stories that turn out to be of little importance, and we provide a robustness exercise concerning the importance of changes in income uncertainty.
