A theory of interpretive clustering in free recall

چکیده
The existence of a polysemy effect in episodic memory is demonstrated through an analysis of data from the experiments of Lohnas et al. (2015) and Healey and Kahana (2016). Three word-length related features are reported: (1) the average distance between the serial positions of consecutively recalled words is an increasing function of the second word’s length; (2) the recall of words in the order in which they were presented is more likely to occur for shorter words; (3) longer words are easier to recall than shorter words from the same list. These phenomena are reproduced by modeling the fact that shorter words have a larger number of meanings (polysemy). This is shown to be at the root of our tendency to recall verbal sequences in forward order, and a conjecture is put forth regarding the general methods we employ to store information on the chronology of events.

The Impact of Semantic Clustering on Iranian EFL Advanced Learners’ Vocabulary Retention
This study investigated the impact of semantic clustering on Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary retention at advanced level. Participants were female learners randomly assigned to two groups of 15. Four instruments (TOEFL test; vocabulary pretest; immediate posttest, and delayed recall posttest) were used. The experimental group underwent semantic clustering vocabulary presentation in which the l...
متن کاملThe Interpretive Analysis of the Verse "کُلٌّ فی فَلَکٍ یَسْبَحُون" (All glide along, each in its own orbit) in Light of the Theory of Volume of Space
In several verses, the Holy Qur'an refers to astronomy and the heavenly bodies, and raises some issues such as the relations and interactions of the heavenly bodies and their surrounding environment. Among these verses are verse 40 of Surah al-Yasin and verse 33 of Surah al-Anbiyah which express the positional and motional characteristics of the Sun and the Moon by choosing specific and purpose...
متن کاملSeparable prefrontal cortex contributions to free recall.
In everyday life, we often must remember the past in the absence of helpful cues in the environment. In these cases, the brain directs retrieval by relying on internally maintained cues and strategies. Free recall is a widely used behavioral paradigm for studying retrieval with minimal cue support. During free recall, individuals often recall semantically related items consecutively--an effect ...
متن کاملInterpretive Study of the Verses Relating Misleading to God and Its Contradiction with Human Free Will
There are two initial and penal types of Divine leading and misleading; Neither of these two types is in conflict with human free will; Because either it may not be related to God or, if it may, it is in such a manner that is in full agreement with human authority. But the primary guidance, which means showing the way to perfection and happiness to man, and the penal guidance, which is the resu...
متن کاملClustering of a Number of Genes Affecting in Milk Production using Information Theory and Mutual Information
Information theory is a branch of mathematics. Information theory is used in genetic and bioinformatics analyses and can be used for many analyses related to the biological structures and sequences. Bio-computational grouping of genes facilitates genetic analysis, sequencing and structural-based analyses. In this study, after retrieving gene and exon DNA sequences affecting milk yield in dairy ...
