Dopamine: Context and counterfactuals.

چکیده
Dopamine and Reward Prediction Errors How does the brain learn what feels good? How does it adapt to new foods, bad bets, and played-out songs? How is it tricked into wanting ever-increasing doses of heroin or cocaine? Is there a simple rule that links neural signaling to the fundamental approach and avoidance responses on which more complex behavior is built? It is now almost 20 y since Schultz, Montague, and Dayan (1) gave a provocative answer to these questions, an answer that is now recognized as one of the cornerstones of reinforcement learning and neuroeconomics. In a series of prior papers (reviewed in ref. 2), Schultz and collaborators had demonstrated that dopamine-releasing cells in the ventral

TOMASZ PLACEK and THOMAS MÜLLER COUNTERFACTUALS AND HISTORICAL POSSIBILITY
We show that truth conditions for counterfactuals need not always be given in terms of a vague notion of similarity. To this end, we single out the important class of historical counterfactuals and give formally rigorous truth conditions for these counterfactuals, employing a partial ordering relation called “comparative closeness” that is defined in the framework of branching space-times. Amon...

متن کاملEmbracing Events in Causal Modelling: Interventions and Counterfactuals in CP-Logic
This paper integrates Pearl’s seminal work on probability and causality with that of Shafer. Using the language of CP-logic, it transposes Pearl’s analysis of interventions and counterfactuals to the semantic context of Shafer’s probability trees. This gives us definitions that work not on the level of random variables, but on the level of Humean events. There are some tangible benefits to our ...
متن کاملCounterfactual scorekeeping
Orthodoxy has it that counterfactuals cannot be treated as strict conditionals. But there is a loophole: if the strictness is a function of context then maybe they can be so treated. I argue for a loophole analysis that treats ‘would’-counterfactuals as strict conditionals that are duals to ‘might’counterfactuals. Most of the work lies in getting straight about the interaction between context a...
متن کاملNew foundations for counterfactuals
Philosophers typically rely on intuitions when providing a semantics for counterfactual conditionals. However, intuitions regarding counterfactual conditionals are notoriously shaky. The aim of this paper is to provide a principled account of the semantics of counterfactual conditionals. This principled account is provided by what I dub the Royal Rule, a deterministic analogue of the Principal ...
