چکیده
Responses to previous reviews This LTREB proposal was submitted in January, 2008 and was not funded. The reviewer and panel comments were very helpful in drafting a revision and in contemplating the long-term research goals of the PI. All reviewer comments prompted changes in this proposal; the most notable concerns and criticisms (italicized and shortened) from the panel summary are directly addressed below. Other reviewer comments were addressed via direct edits to the proposal.

Can plant–natural enemy communication withstand disruption by biotic and abiotic factors?
The attraction of natural enemies towards herbivore-induced plant volatiles is a well-documented phenomenon. However, the majority of published studies are carried under optimal water and nutrient regimes and with just one herbivore. But what happens when additional levels of ecological complexity are added? Does the presence of a second herbivore, microorganisms, and abiotic stress interfere w...
متن کاملThe Importance of Biotic vs. Abiotic Drivers of Local Plant Community Composition Along Regional Bioclimatic Gradients
We assessed if the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors for plant community composition differs along environmental gradients and between functional groups, and asked which implications this may have in a warmer and wetter future. The study location is a unique grid of sites spanning regional-scale temperature and precipitation gradients in boreal and alpine grasslands in southern ...
متن کاملAdaptation to abiotic conditions drives local adaptation in bacteria and viruses coevolving in heterogeneous environments
Parasite local adaptation, the greater performance of parasites on their local compared with foreign hosts, has important consequences for the maintenance of diversity and epidemiology. While the abiotic environment may significantly affect local adaptation, most studies to date have failed either to incorporate the effects of the abiotic environment, or to separate them from those of the bioti...
متن کاملThe shape of things to come: woodland herb niche contraction begins during recruitment in mesic forest microhabitat.
Natural abundance is shaped by the abiotic requirements and biotic interactions that shape a species' niche, yet these influences are rarely decoupled. Moreover, most plant mortality occurs during early life stages, making seed recruitment critical in structuring plant populations. We find that natural abundance of two woodland herbs, Hexastylis arifolia and Hepatica nobilis, peaks at intermedi...
متن کاملAbiotic vs. Biotic Influences on Habitat Selection of Coexisting Species: Climate Change Impacts?
Species are commonly segregated along gradients of microclimate and vegetation. I explore the question of whether segregation is the result of microhabitat partitioning (biotic effects) or choice of differing microclimates (abiotic effects). I explored this question for four ground-nesting bird species that are segregated along a microclimate and vegetation gradient in Arizona. Birds shifted po...
