Astrometric CCD observations of the inner Jovian satellites in 1999 – 2000

چکیده
This paper presents the results of observations of the inner Jovian satellites Thebe, Amalthea, Adrastea and Metis made in October–November 1999 and in November 2000. We provide ∆α and ∆δ of Thebe and Amalthea with respect to the Galilean satellites, while the positions of Adrastea and Metis are referred to either the Galilean moons or to Thebe or to Amalthea. All observed positions are compared with theoretical ones. Residual statistics show an inner accuracy of our observations in the range from about 0.1 to 0.9 arcsec. The dependence of the differences of the observed and calculated positions on the orbital longitude is presented for our observations of Adrastea and Metis.

The formation of Jupiter's faint rings
Observations by the Galileo spacecraft and the Keck telescope showed that Jupiter's outermost (gossamer) ring is actually two rings circumscribed by the orbits of the small satellites Amalthea and Thebe. The gossamer rings' unique morphology-especially the rectangular end profiles at the satellite's orbit and the enhanced intensities along the top and bottom edges of the rings-can be explained ...
متن کاملCCD photometry and astrometry for visual double and multiple stars of the HIPPARCOS catalogue I. Presentation of the large scale project
A description is given of the activities of an international working group created with the aim of obtaining both photometric and astrometric observations of visual double and multiple stars with angular separations in the range of one to fifteen arcseconds, that formed part of the HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue. The scientific aims and realisations of this European network are given. About 50 obser...
متن کاملThe Galilean Satellites as a Source of CO in the Jovian Upper Atmosphere ~
Material from the Galilean satellites of Jupiter ejected by energetic particles in the Jovian magnetosphere may provide large sources of oxygen to the parent planet. Formation of a CO molecule is the ultimate fate of an oxygen atom in the upper Jovian atmosphere. This high altitude source of CO supports Beer and Taylor's (1978, Astrophys. J. 221) observations and analysis, provided that the glo...
متن کاملMeasurements of Tidal Tail Populations Designed to Optimize Their Use as Potential Probes
The launching of up to four astrometric missions in the next decade will enable us to make measurements of stars in tidal streamers from Galactic satellites of sufficient accuracy to place strong constraints on the mass distribution in the Milky Way. In this paper we simulate observations of debris populations in order to assess the required properties of any data set chosen to implement this e...
متن کاملNear-infrared Brightness of the Galilean Satellites Eclipsed in Jovian Shadow: a New Technique to Investigate Jovian Upper Atmosphere
We have discovered that Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are bright around 1.5 μm even when not directly lit by sunlight, based on observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Subaru Telescope. The observations were conducted with non-sidereal tracking on Jupiter outside of the field of view to reduce the stray light subtraction uncertainty due to the close proximity of Jupiter. Their ecli...
