A Survey Paper on Processor Workloads

چکیده

Processors are ubiquitous in today's world. Almost any electronic device contains a processor, and their computing power ranges from a few thousand to millions of instruction per second. Processors are built for many different purposes, and so their capabilities vary greatly. Even within a specific area, processors are different enough to make it difficult to compare them. Benchmarks have been developed to measure performance of processors and rank them among their peers. Much research has been conducted to design and develop benchmarks capable of reflecting a processor's performance. This paper surveys benchmarks in five major processor families: general purpose processors, graphics processors, network processors, embedded processors, and processors in supercomputers. This paper also covers some basics about benchmarks.

Power and Performance of Native and Java Benchmarks on 130nm to 32nm Process Technologies

Over the past decade, chip fabrication technology shrank from 130nm to 32nm. This reduction was generally considered to provide performance improvements together with chip power reductions. This paper examines how well process technology and microarchitecture delivered on this assumption. This paper evaluates power and performance of native and Java workloads across a selection of IA32 processo...

Dynamic Processor Overclocking for Improving Performance of Power-Constrained Systems

Power and thermal constraints are proving to be limiting factors for computer system performance. Conventional approaches estimate a design power and cooling limit based on consumption for a specific, worst-case workload while operating at a nominal frequency. The system is then constrained to operate at or below this frequency even for workloads that have lower power and cooling requirements. ...

Characterization of simultaneous multithreading (SMT) efficiency in POWER5

Coarse-grained multithreading, the switching of threads to avoid idle processor time during long-latency events, has been available on IBM systems since 1998. Simultaneous multithreading (SMT), first available on the POWER5e processor, moves beyond simple thread switching to the maintenance of two thread streams that are issued as continuously as possible to ensure the maximum use of processor ...

ELI-C: A Loop-level Workload Characterization Tool

Every processor manufacturing cycle includes a workload gathering step. The input to this step is a diverse set of workloads from processor-specific domains. Simulating the entire workload set is time consuming and resource intensive, and therefore is infeasible. To reduce the simulation time, some techniques in the literature have exploited the internal program repetitiveness to extract repres...

Multimedia extensions for general purpose microprocessors: a survey

The last decade has seen the integration of audio, video, and 3D graphics into traditional workloads as well as the emergence of new workloads dominated by the processing of data representing such information. Initially, these emerging workloads were supported by dedicated, application speci c integrated circuits and digital signal processors. To avoid the added cost and complexity of these ded...
