چکیده

We put forward a new paradigm for building hybrid encryption schemes from constrained chosen-ciphertext secure (CCCA) key-encapsulation mechanisms (KEMs) plus authenticated symmetric encryption. Constrained chosen-ciphertext security is a new security notion for KEMs that we propose. CCCA has less demanding security requirements than standard chosen-ciphertext (CCA) security (since it requires the adversary to have a certain plaintextknowledge when making a decapsulation query) yet we can prove that CCCA is sufficient for secure hybrid encryption. Our notion is not only useful to express the Kurosawa-Desmedt public-key encryption scheme and its generalizations to hash-proof systems in an abstract KEM/DEM security framework. It also has a very constructive appeal, which we demonstrate with a new encryption scheme whose security relies on a class of intractability assumptions that we show (in the generic group model) strictly weaker than the Decision Diffie-Hellman (DDH) assumption. This appears to be the first practical public-key encryption scheme in the literature from an algebraic assumption strictly weaker than DDH.

Kurosawa-Desmedt KEM is not CCA2-secure

At CRYPTO 2004, Kurosawa and Desmedt presented a new hybrid encryption scheme that is CCA2-secure in the standard model. Until now it was unknown if the key encapsulation part of the Kurosawa-Desmedt scheme by itself is still CCA2-secure or not. In this note we answer this question to the negative, namely we present a simple CCA2 attack on the Kurosawa-Desmedt key encapsulation mechanism. Our a...

Chosen-Ciphertext Secure Key-Encapsulation Based on Gap Hashed Diffie-Hellman

We propose a practical key encapsulation mechanism with a simple and intuitive design concept. Security against chosen-ciphertext attacks can be proved in the standard model under a new assumption, the Gap Hashed Diffie-Hellman (GHDH) assumption. The security reduction is tight and simple. Secure key encapsulation, combined with an appropriately secure symmetric encryption scheme, yields a hybr...

Identity Based Key Encapsulation with Wildcards

We propose a hybrid (KEM/DEM) model for the recently proposed primitive of identity-based encryption with wildcards (WIBE), and confirm that the hybrid construction is secure. We also propose new chosenciphertext secure WIBE schemes that have somewhat more efficient security reductions and some performance benefits. Our first construction is a generic one from any one-way secure WIBE in the ran...

Secure Cryptographic Workflow in the Standard Model

Following the work of Al-Riyami et al. we define the notion of key encapsulation mechanism supporting cryptographic workflow (WF-KEM) and prove a KEM-DEM composition theorem which extends the notion of hybrid encryption to cryptographic workflow. We then generically construct a WF-KEM from an identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme and a secret sharing scheme. Chosen ciphertext security is achie...

A New Paradigm of Hybrid Encryption Scheme

In this paper, we show that a key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) does not have to be IND-CCA secure in the construction of hybrid encryption schemes, as was previously believed. That is, we present a more efficient hybrid encryption scheme than Shoup [12] by using a KEM which is not necessarily IND-CCA secure. Nevertheless, our scheme is secure in the sense of IND-CCA under the DDH assumption in...
