Geographic State Machine Replication
نویسندگان
چکیده
Manycurrent online servicesneed to serve clientsdistributedacross geographic areas. These systems are subject to stringent availability and performance requirements. In order to meet these requirements, replication is used to tolerate the crash of servers and improve performance by deploying replicas near the clients. Coordinating geographically distributed replicas, however, is challenging. We present GeoPaxos, a protocol that addresses this challenge by combining three insights. It decouples order from execution in state machine replication, it induces a partial order on the execution of operations, instead of a total order, and it exploits geographic locality, typical of geo-distributed online services. GeoPaxos outperforms state-of-the-art approaches bymore than an order ofmagnitude in some cases. We describe GeoPaxos design and implementation in detail, and present an extensive performance evaluation. Chapter 7: Replication Management using the State Machine Approach
Most distributed systems employ replicated services in one form or another. By replicating a service, we can support fault-tolerance as well as improving overall throughput by placing server replicas at sites where the service is needed. Protocols for replication management can be divided into two general classes. The first, called "the state machine approach" or "active replication", has no ce...
متن کاملCheckpointing in Parallel State-Machine Replication
State-machine replication is a popular approach to building fault-tolerant systems, which relies on the sequential execution of commands to guarantee strong consistency. Sequential execution, however, threatens performance. Recently, several proposals have suggested parallelizing the execution model of the replicas to enhance state-machine replication’s performance. Despite their success in acc...
متن کاملIntroduction to Transactional Replication
Transactional replication is a new enabling technology for service replication. Service replication means that a service runs on a group of processes (service replicas) that work together to execute requests issued by external clients. The characteristic feature of transactional replication is that client requests can be processed on a single replica concurrently as atomic transactions that can...

This paper presents vCorfu, a strongly consistent cloudscale object store built over a shared log. vCorfu augments the traditional replication scheme of a shared log to provide fast reads and leverages a new technique, composable state machine replication, to compose large state machines from smaller ones, enabling the use of state machine replication to be used to efficiently in huge data stor...
