Robust Consumption and Portfolio Choice for Time Varying Investment Opportunities
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines a continuous-time intertemporal consumption and portfolio choice problem for an investor with recursive preferences. The investor worries about model misspecification and seeks robust decision rules. The expected excess return of a risky asset follows a mean-reverting process. I find that whether the concern about model misspecification decreases the total demand for equities largely depends on risk aversion and the attitude toward intertemporal substitution. When the elasticity of intertemporal substitution is about 1 and risk aversion is moderate, the aversion to model uncertainty increases the proportion of wealth invested in equities. The calibration analysis based on detection-error probabilities shows that the quantitative effect of robustness is almost negligible. JEL: G11; D81; C61

Estimating Portfolio and Consumption Choice: A Conditional Euler Equations Approach
This paper develops a nonparametric approach to examine how portfolio and consumption choice depends on variables that forecast time-varying investment opportunities. I estimate single-period and multiperiod portfolio and consumption rules of an investor with constant relative risk aversion and a one-month to 20year horizon. The investor allocates wealth to the NYSE index and a 30-day Treasury ...
متن کاملPortfolio and Consumption Choice with Stochastic Investment Opportunities and Habit Formation in Preferences
This paper investigates the dynamic consumption and portfolio choice of an investor with habit formation in preferences and access to a complete financial market with time-varying investment opportunities. An exact and simple characterization of the optimal behavior under general, possibly non-Markov, dynamics of market prices is derived. Relative to the benchmark case of time-additive power ut...
متن کاملLabor supply flexibility and portfolio choice in a life cycle model
This paper examines the effect of the labor-leisure choice on portfolio and consumption decisions over an individual’s life cycle. The model incorporates the fact that individuals may have considerable flexibility in varying their work effort (including their choice of when to retire). Given this flexibility, the individual simultaneously determines optimal levels of current consumption, labor ...
متن کاملA two-stage robust model for portfolio selection by using goal programming
In portfolio selection models, uncertainty plays an important role. The parameter’s uncertainty leads to getting away from optimal solution so it is needed to consider that in models. In this paper we presented a two-stage robust model that in first stage determines the desired percentage of investment in each industrial group by using return and risk measures from different industries. One rea...
متن کاملOptimal Consumption and Portfolio Choice with Loss Aversion
This paper analyses the consumption-investment problem of a loss averse investor equipped with s-shaped utility over consumption relative to a time-varying reference level. Optimal consumption exceeds the reference level in good times and descend to the subsistence level in bad times. Accordingly, the optimal portfolio is dominated by a mean-variance component in good times and rebalanced more ...
