A Broadcasting Protocol for Video-on-Demand Using Optional Partial Preloading

چکیده

Broadcasting protocols for video-on-demand normally require customers to wait for a few minutes before starting to watch the video of their choice. The easiest way to avoid this delay is to preload in each customer settop-box the first few minutes of each video. We present here a broadcasting protocol making this requirement optional: customers are offered the option of preloading the first few minutes of one or more videos in order to eliminate the small delay they would otherwise experience. We also show that this feature can be implemented at a very reasonable cost.

A Stream Tapping Protocol with Partial Preloading

Stream tapping–also known as patching–can reduce the bandwidth requirements of video-on-demand services by allowing new customer requests to “tap” the data streams of other requests for the same video. Previous studies have shown that stream tapping works best when the request arrival rate does not exceed ten to twenty requests per hour for a two-hour video. At higher arrival rates, it performs...

An efficient video broadcasting protocol with scalable preloading scheme

We present a new video broadcasting protocol called the scalable preloading broadcast protocol. This protocol provides cost effective access times to viewers by using a scalable preloading method. The new protocol reduces the video stream management complexity as well as the required broadcasting bandwidth. To demonstrate the benefit of new protocol, we perform various simulations to compare it...

A hybrid pagoda broadcasting protocol: fixed-delay pagoda broadcasting protocol with partial preloading

Broadcasting protocols offer an efficient and scalable method to provide video-on-demand. We present a new broadcasting protocol that assumes that some portions of the video are already preloaded in the set-top-box (STB), and at the same time, requires the user to wait for a fixed-delay before viewing. As a result, there is a trade-off between the size of the consumed local storage, user waitin...

A Reactive Broadcasting Protocol for Video on Demand

Broadcasting can reduce the cost of video on demand services by distributing in a more efficient fashion videos that are simultaneously watched by many viewers. Rather than waiting for individual requests, broadcasting schedules repeated broadcasts of the various segments of a video ahead of time. Hence it performs best when it is used to distribute videos that are watched concurrently by hundr...

A hybrid broadcasting protocol for video on demand

Broadcasting protocols can improve the efficiency of video on demand services by reducing the bandwidth required to transmit videos that are simultaneously watched by many viewers. It has been recently shown that broadcasting protocols using a very large number of very low bandwidth streams for each video required less total bandwidth than protocols using a few high-bandwidth streams shared by ...
