Physical Asymmetries and Brightness Perception

چکیده

This paper considers the problem of estimating the brightness of visual stimuli. A number of physical asymmetries are seen to permit determination of brightness that is invariant to certain manipulations of the sensor responses, such as inversion. In particular, the light-dark range asymmetry is examined and is shown to result, over a certain range, in increased variability of sensor responses as scene brightness increases. Based on this observation we propose that brightness can be measured using variability statistics of conditional distributions of image patch values. We suggest that a process of statistical learning of these conditional distributions underlies the Stevens effect.

CSSs in a sample of B 2 radio sources of intermediate strength

We present radio observations of 19 candidate compact steep-spectrum (CSS) objects selected from a well-defined, complete sample of 52 B2 radio sources of intermediate strength. These observations were made with the VLA A-array at 4.835 GHz. The radio structures of the entire sample are summarised and the brightness asymmetries within the compact sources are compared with those of the more exte...

Variations in the sky brightness during a lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse is conjectured to have influence on the physical conditions of an environmental area, particularly on the brightness of the sky. The phenomenon might also be relevant on weather parameters change on Earth, such as temperature, humidity and pressure, though a straightforward correlation is not easy to establish. This work mainly aims at measuring the brightness of the sky a...

Contrast and assimilation in the perception of brightness.

The rapid estimation of the brightness of objects is one of the nervous system's major visual tasks. Exactly how the eye and brain perform this basic task is still not understood. Two mechanisms that contribute to human perception of the brightness of objects have been identified previously: (i) the visual response to physical contrast and (ii) assimilation. Use of a unique visual display devic...

Gamut relativity: a new computational approach to brightness and lightness perception.

This article deconstructs the conventional theory that "brightness" and "lightness" constitute perceptual dimensions corresponding to the physical dimensions of luminance and reflectance, and builds in its place the theory that brightness and lightness correspond to computationally defined "modes," rather than dimensions, of perception. According to the theory, called gamut relativity, "blackne...

Interpreting Asymmetries in Speech Perception with Bayesian Inference

This paper proposes a Bayesian account of asymmetries found in speech perception: In many languages, listeners show greater sensitivity if a non-coronal sound (/b/, /p/, /g/, /k/) is changed to coronal sounds (/d/, /t/) than vice versa. The currently predominant explanation for these asymmetries is that they reflect innate constraints from Universal Grammar. Alternatively, we propose that the a...
