چکیده

Foot ulcers can be caused by arterial insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, neuropathy, musculoskeletal disorders, or injury. The clinical features of an ulcer—such as site, shape, edge, base, and state of the surrounding tissues—often give some indication of its aetiology and aid in further management and treatment. Ulceration of the foot is seen in some patients with venous disease but has not been observed in association with any particular treatment regimen. We describe a previously unreported finding of ulceration of the toe and cleft, for which there was no demonstrable ischaemic or vasculitic cause, developing in patients treated with compression bandaging for venous ulcers.

Protocol for a pilot randomised controlled clinical trial to compare the effectiveness of a graduated three layer straight tubular bandaging system when compared to a standard short stretch compression bandaging system in the management of people with venous ulceration: 3VSS2008

BACKGROUND The incidence of venous ulceration is rising with the increasing age of the general population. Venous ulceration represents the most prevalent form of difficult to heal wounds and these problematic wounds require a significant amount of health care resources for treatment. Based on current knowledge multi-layer high compression system is described as the gold standard for treating v...

Profore latex-free multi-layer compression system

Compression bandaging has formed the cornerstone of leg ulcer treatment for venous and mixed aetiology ulcers for several years. Graduated compression bandaging is a successful non-curative treatment for venous leg ulceration (Cullum et al, 2001). The benefits for the patient include reduction of pain, reduction of oedema and subsequent improvement in quality of life. The Profore multi-layer co...

Compression hosiery in the prevention and treatment of venous leg ulcers.

Graduated compression therapy is the recognised gold standard for the treatment of venous ulcers, usually in the form of four-layer bandaging. Unfortunately with some patients the bulkiness of the bandages leads to non-compliance. An alternative to bandaging could be the use of below-knee graduated compression hosiery. This article will review the purpose and function of compression hosiery inc...

Haemodynamic study examining the response of venous blood flow to electrical stimulation of the gastrocnemius muscle in patients with chronic venous disease.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the option of stimulating calf muscle contraction through externally applied neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and to measure venous blood flow response to this stimulation. METHODS Ten patients with class 6 chronic venous disease (CEAP clinical classification) were recruited. Measurements of peak venous velocities in the popliteal vei...

Pathogenesis of chronic venous insufficiency and possible effects of compression and pentoxifylline.

It has been recognized for over 2000 years that ulceration of the leg may be associated with visible varices of the lower limb. More recent physiological investigation has shown that the pressure in the veins of the lower limb remains raised in patients with venous ulceration during ambulation, whereas in normal subjects the pressure in superficial veins falls to a low level. This elevated pres...
