Epidemiology of Rhodococcus equi Foal Pneumonia
نویسنده
چکیده
The epidemiology of Rhodococcus equi foal pneumonia is changing and remains ill-defined. Few foal-specific or farm-specific factors have been correlated with occurrence of this disease. The density of mares and foals and the airborne concentration of virulent isolates of R. equi are associated with the disease, but a causal relationship has not been established for either factor. Equid herpesvirus 1 and rhodococcus equi coinfection in a foal with bronchointerstitial pneumonia
A 2-month-old foal with septic shock and severe respiratory distress was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Due to poor prognosis, the foal was euthanized. Histopathology showed lesions suggestive of Rhodococcus equi infection associated with a diffuse interstitial infiltrate of foamy macrophages and syncytial cells presenting large acidophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies, fibrin e...
متن کاملRhodococcus equi: an animal and human pathogen.
Recent isolations of Rhodococcus equi from cavitatory pulmonary disease in patients with AIDS have aroused interest among medical microbiologists in this unusual organism. Earlier isolations from humans had also been in immunosuppressed patients following hemolymphatic tumors or renal transplantation. This organism has been recognized for many years as a cause of a serious pyogranulomatous pneu...

Susceptibility of foals to Rhodococcus equi pneumonia is exclusive to the first few months of life. The objective of this study was to investigate the immediate immunologic response of foal and adult horse antigen-presenting cells (APCs) upon infection with R. equi. We measured the activation of the antigen-presenting major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecule, costimulatory molec...
متن کاملRhodococcus equi Foal Pneumonia: Failure of Serologic Tests to Accurately Detect Disease
Serologic assays, whether conducted on single samples or multiple samples to assess seroconversion, do not provide reliable information on which to formulate, substantiate, or eliminate a diagnosis of Rhodococcus equi foal pneumonia.
