Resonances and the morphology of spirals in N-body simulations

چکیده

We find, by means of N-body simulations, non-linear spiral modes that last from four to seven pattern rotations and secure a grand-design morphology to the models. Their dynamical behavior includes the termination of the strong, symmetric, logarithmic stellar spirals inside their 4:1 resonance radius, as foreseen from the orbital theory and from SPH gasdynamical models. The spiral modes start along theΩ−κ/2 curve and have weak extensions beyond the 4:1 resonance. Strong, bisymmetric logarithmic spirals end at about 2–3 exponential disk scale lengths. A central oval distortion is always present in the models. In many cases we have more than one dominant mode existing over different distance intervals. For each of these spiral modes we find the regions of resonances as determined by its pattern speed. We observe that the dynamics of the mode are locally influenced by the presence of the resonances.

Nuclear Spirals as Signatures of Supermassive Black Holes

Recent high resolution images of spiral galaxies show wide varieties of features including nuclear spirals in the central parts. Some of the galaxies show grand-design nuclear spirals. The morphology of grand-design spirals can be further divided by the openness of the arms: tightly wound ones with winding angle of around 3π radian and open spirals with winding angle of around π radian. Based o...

Density Waves Inside Inner Lindblad Resonance: Nuclear Spirals in Disk Galaxies

We analyze formation of grand-design two-arm spiral structure in the nuclear regions of disk galaxies. Such morphology has been recently detected in a number of objects using high-resolution near-infrared observations. Motivated by the observed (1) continuity between the nuclear and kpc-scale spiral structures, and by (2) low arm-interarm contrast, we apply the density wave theory to explain th...

Gas Dynamics in Central Parts of Galaxies

Asymmetries in galactic potentials, either self-induced, or caused by a passing companion, play an important role in global gas dynamics in galaxies. In particular, they are able to trigger gas inflow, which in turn feeds nuclear activity. In the inner kiloparsec, the inflowing gas becomes subject to various resonances induced by asymmetry in the potential. This produces complicated gas morphol...

Nuclear spirals in galaxies: gas response to asymmetric potential. I. Linear theory

Nuclear spirals can provide a wealth of information about the nuclear potential in disc galaxies. They are unlikely to form in nuclei with solid-body rotation, yet they are present in a majority of galactic centres. Their morphology varies depending on whether a central massive black hole (MBH) is present or absent in the galaxy. In this paper I consider predictions of the linear theory for wav...

Size-Controlled Synthesis of Gold Nanostars and Their Characterizations and Plasmon Resonances

Gold nanostar particles were synthesized using seed-mediated method. Au-seed was synthesized with the diameter of approximately 3 nm and a considerably low STDEV of less than 1 nm. Then, different amount of Au seed was introduced into the growth solution of nanostars and the influence of the changes in concentration of Au seed on the growth process was investigated. The size of gold nanostars i...
