چکیده

The indirect arterial pulse tracing from a healthy young person normally shows two systolic waves, the percussion wave and the tidal wave (Fig. 1). In hypertension and old age the percussion wave is usually small or absent (Fig. 2). In health, anwmia, and hyperthyroidism (Hancock and Abelmann, 1957), and in patent ductus arteriosus (Fig. 3), the two peaks may be prominent enough to give the pulse a bisferiens character. In aortic valve disease the pulse has a water-hammer quality when the percussion wave is large and sharply peaked, and an anacrotic quality when it is absent or small. The bisferiens pulse is known to occur in aortic valve disease (Bramwell, 1937) (Fig. 4), but there is little agreement about either the nature of the responsible valve lesion or the genesis of the pulse. The purpose of this communication is to describe the nature of the aortic valve lesion in a series of patients with a bisferiens pulse, and to consider the factors that may be responsible for the character of the pulse.

Haemodynamic findings in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: pulsus bisferiens and Brockenbrough-Braunwald-Morrow sign.

: A 55-year-old gentleman with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and heart failure symptoms underwent cardiac catheterization, which confirmed a significant pressure drop (60 mmHg) across the left ventricular outflow tract, a double-peaked pulse (pulsus bisferiens) and an absent postextrasystolic potentiation (Brockenbrough-Braunwald-Morrow sign) in the left ventricular outflow tract and ...

The mechanism of the pulsus bisferiens.

The earliest reference in print to the pulsus bisferiens* is in a Latin edition of Galen's De Pulsibus, published in Paris in 1532. From this, it is clear that debate concerning the nature and significance of this type of pulse dates from the first and second centuries A.D. Galen was insistent that, when two separate impulses are felt in the pulse, it cannot be assumed that two separate pulse w...

Mid-systolic sound associated with aortic insufficiency and bisferiens pulse.

Systolic ejection clicks, often associated with cardiac disease, can be distinguished from mid-systolic clicks of mitral and tricuspid origin, which are frequently benign. A different mid-systolic sound has been recognized, with timing similar to the mid-systolic clicks, which is associated with aortic insufficiency. This report describes a case in which such a sound was identified prior to aor...
