Hierarichical Control in Hand-Foot Coordination
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is much evidence to indicate that inter-hand coordination is temporally/spatially linked during maximal speed conditions. This linkage was examined across all limbs. In two experiments participants moved two limbs at maximal speed the same target distance (28 cm) while one limb negotiated a 20 cm vertical barrier. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the effects of a barrier hand on a non-barrier hand and the effects of a barrier foot on a non-barrier foot produced a similar pattern of results on movement time, peak velocity, time to peak, and peak height. Experiment 2 demonstrated that a barrier foot had greater impact on a non-barrier hand compared to the influence of a barrier hand on a non-barrier foot across dependent variables. This hierarchical relationship, where foot-control is weakly linked to hand-control but hand-control is strongly linked to foot-control, is cogent with the decoupling hypothesis for the origin of hominin bipedalism (Sylvester, 2006).

Difference in Activity in the Supplementary Motor Area Depending on Limb Combination of Hand–Foot Coordinated Movements
Periodic interlimb coordination shows lower performance when the ipsilateral hand and foot (e.g., right hand and right foot) are simultaneously moved than when the contralateral hand and foot (e.g., right hand and left foot) are simultaneously moved. The present study aimed to investigate how brain activity that is related to the dependence of hand-foot coordination on limb combination, using f...
متن کاملPotential explanation of limb combination performance differences for two-limb coordination tasks
Rhythmic two-limb coordinated movements in the sagittal plane are variable and inaccurate when the movements are in the opposite direction as compared with those in the same direction (directional constraint). The magnitude of directional constraint depends on the particular limb combination. It is prominent in ipsilateral hand-foot coordination, but minimal in bimanual hand coordination. The r...
متن کاملOptimal Control of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Model using Variational Iteration Method
In this paper, the optimal control of transmission dynamics of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), formulated by a compartmental deterministic SEIPR (Susceptible-Incubation (Exposed)- Infected - Post infection virus shedding - Recovered) model with vaccination and treatment as control parameters is considered. The objective function is based on the combination of minimizing the number of infec...
متن کاملFactors that determine directional constraint in ipsilateral hand–foot coordinated movements
In performing simultaneous rhythmic movements of the ipsilateral hand and foot, there are differences in the level of stability between same directional (stable) and opposite directional (unstable) movements. This is the directional constraint. In this study, we investigated three factors ("interaction in efferent process," "interaction of afferent signals," and "error correction") proposed to ...
متن کاملNonlinearities 1 Running Head: NONLINEARITIES IN HAND AND FOOT COORDINATION Nonlinearities in Hand and Foot Coordination
Biomechanical studies performed over the past thirty years have demonstrated that the simultaneous motion of human appendages exhibits significant coordination or “synergy” and that this dependence of the motion of seemingly independent body extremities is highly nonlinear. The present paper reports new experimental research conducted with a group of subjects for the case of coupled hand and fo...
