Application of biorthogonal eigenfunction system for extraction of Tollmien-Schlichting waves in acoustic receptivity simulations

چکیده
Acoustic receptivity of a two-dimensional boundary layer on a flat plate with elliptic leading edge is studied through direct numerical simulation (DNS). Sound waves are modelled by a uniform oscillation of freestream boundaries in time which results to an infinite-wavelength acoustic wave. Acoustic disturbances interact with strong streamwise gradients at the leading edge or surface nonhomogeneities and create Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves inside the boundary layer. Measuring amplitude of TS waves created by sound waves is challenging due to presence of Stokes wave (acoustic boundary layer) with the same temporal frequency of TS waves. In this study biorthogonal eigenfunction system of local linear stability equations has been utilised to extract TS wave amplitudes. This method is based on the concept of using adjoint mode as a projector where the TS amplitude is obtained by projecting the DNS solution onto adjoint TS modes. However, the computed TS wave amplitude employing this method found to be modulated. It is shown that the modulation is due to existence of a small amplitude wave in the DNS data that is not expandable onto the basis of local linear stability equations.

Computational techniques developed to simulate receptivity mechanisms near a swept-wing leadingedge are presented. The method is based on hybrid finite-difference and spectral approximations to the compressible Navier–Stokes equations in a generalized coordinate system. Particular attention is paid to boundary treatments in an effort to reduce the generation of spurious waves which can mask the...

In this paper the interaction of free–stream acoustic waves with the leading edge of an aerodynamic body is investigated and we compare two different methods for analysing this interaction. Results are compared for a method which incorporates Orr–Sommerfeld calculations using the parabolized stability equation (PSE) to those of direct numerical simulations (DNS). By comparing the streamwise amp...
متن کاملActive Control of Cavity Shear Layer Oscillation
Influence of externally forced initial flow conditions on axisymmetric cavity shear layer were studied. A sinusoidally heated strip upstream of the cavity excited Tollmien-Schlichting waves which, after amplification by the boundary layer, were introduced to the cavity shear layer. By choosing forcing frequencies within the range of shear layer receptivity, it was possible to control frequency ...

Direct numerical simulation of receptivity in a boundary layer over a sharp wedge of half-angle 5.3 degrees is carried out with two-dimensional perturbations introduced into the flow by periodic-in-time blowing-suction through a slot. The freestream Mach number is equal to 8. The perturbation flow field downstream from the slot is decomposed into normal modes with the help of the biorthogonal e...
