Sodium balance in the eggs of the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar.

چکیده
Although the eggs of salmon and trout have long been of interest to physiologists the extent to which the eggs are permeable to sodium ions is not clear from previous accounts. Freshly stripped salmon eggs contain 2-3 /t-equiv. Na/egg. During embryonic development the quantity of sodium in the egg remains approximately constant (Hayes, 1949), but sodium balance in the freshly stripped egg is complicated. From experiments with freshly stripped eggs in hyperosmotic saline, containing 0*55 MNaCl/1., Kalman (1959) inferred that some sodium penetrated into the yolk, but nevertheless the sodium concentration in the yolk remained much lower than in the medium. Parry Howells (personal communication) has reported that the periviteUine fluid concentrates sodium ions in the water-hardened egg. In order to clarify the situation the exchange of sodium has been examined in freshly stripped, waterhardened eggs, and in eggs in the eyed stage.

Effect of feeding rate on nutrient digestibility in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.
A digestibility trial was conducted to examine the effect of feeding rate on dry matter, gross energy, crude protein and phosphorus digestibility in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Duplicate groups of fish were fed 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 and 1.9% BW/day. The faeces were collected by Guelph-type collectors for five successive days. Dry matter, protein and phosphorus digestibility’s were all s...

Amoebic gill disease (AGD) is the most important parasitic disease of Atlantic salmon industry inAustralia. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) experimentally infected with Neoparamoeba sp. apparently showedAGD gross signs on the gill and an amoebic-associated gill pathology. Physico-chemical factors of waterduring the experiment were monitored regularly and were approximately constant (temperature: ...

متن کاملSaprolegnia diclina IIIA and S. parasitica employ different infection strategies when colonizing eggs of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.
Here, we address the morphological changes of eyed eggs of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. infected with Saprolegnia from a commercial hatchery and after experimental infection. Eyed eggs infected with Saprolegnia spp. from 10 Atlantic salmon females were obtained. Egg pathology was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Eggs from six of ten females were infected with S. parasi...
متن کاملImpact of Atlantic salmon cage culture on sediment chemistry in Mjoifjordur, Iceland
Impact of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) cage culture in Mjoifjordur, Eastern Iceland on the chemistry of the sediment was investigated. Sediment samples were collected using a Shipek grab in December 2003. A core sub-sample was taken from each grab for analyzing total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and phosphorus in different depths from three stations at various distances...
