Accretion of helium and metal-rich gas onto neutron stars and black holes at high luminosities

چکیده
Ultraluminous X-ray sources fed by Wolf-Rayet star winds and X-ray bursters in ultracompact binaries with He or C white dwarfs have accretion disks, whose properties may significantly differ from those of pure H α-accretion disks. We have therefore included the dependence on charge number Z and mean molecular weights μe/I into the Shakura and Sunyaev (1973) scaling relations for the key parameters of the disk. Furthermore, we also consider the case of the pseudo-Newtonian potential of Paczyńsky and Wiita (1980). These scaling relations might become useful, e.g., when estimating the illumination efficiency of the external parts of the disk. We also address the changes in the structure of the boundary (spreading) layer on the surface of neutron stars, occurring in the case of H depleted accretion disks.

Accretion onto Black Holes and Neutron Stars: Differences and Similarities
Accreting black holes and neutron stars at luminosities above 0.01 of the critical Eddington luminosity have a lot of similarities, but also drastic differences in their radiation and power density spectra. The efficiency of energy release due to accretion onto a rotating neutron star usually is higher than in the case of a black hole. The theory of the spreading layer on the surface of an accr...
متن کاملAstrophysical Evidence for Black Hole Event Horizons
Astronomers have discovered many potential black holes in X-ray binaries and galactic nuclei. These black holes are usually identified by the fact that they are too massive to be neutron stars. Until recently, however, there was no convincing evidence that the objects identified as black hole candidates actually have event horizons. This has changed with extensive applications of a class of acc...
متن کاملJet-dominated advective systems: radio and X-ray luminosity dependence on the accretion rate
We present a novel method to measure the accretion rate of radio emitting X-ray binaries (XRBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) independently of the X-ray luminosity. The radio emission of the jet is used as a tracer for the accretion rate and is normalised using sources of known accretion rates: island state neutron stars and efficiently radiating black holes close to a state transition. We s...
متن کاملFueling Low-level Agn Activity through the Stochastic Accretion of Cold Gas1
Using a simple description of feedback from black hole growth, we develop an analytic model for the fueling of Seyferts (low-luminosity AGN) and their relation to their host galaxies, Eddington ratio distributions, and cosmological evolution. We derive a solution for the time evolution of accretion rates in a feedback-driven blast wave, applicable to large-scale outflows from bright quasars in ...
متن کاملRapid growth of high redshift black holes
We discuss a model for the early assembly of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies that trace their hierarchical build-up far up in the dark halo ‘merger tree’. Motivated by the observations of luminous quasars around redshift z ≈ 6 with SMBH masses ≈ 10M⊙, we assess the possibility of an early phase of stable super-critical quasi-spherical accretion in the BHs hosted by me...
