چکیده

Current Day Annotation These notes were written in 1995. Since 1961 the best lower bound on R(3, k) had been ck2 ln−2 k. Building on a paper of Erdős, Winkler and Suen I was able to show that c could be made arbitrarily large. Why didn’t I publish? Only a few weeks later Jeong-Han Kim found that R(3, k) = Ω(k2 ln−1 k), matching the upper bound of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi, so thatR(3, k) = Θ(k2 ln−1 k). The ideas in these notes, studying the random greedy trianglefree algorithm, were cited by Tom Bohman in his analysis of this process and his alternate proof of Kim’s result.

The effect of rapid HIV-1 testing on uptake of perinatal HIV-1 interventions: a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE We examined whether HIV-1 testing using a rapid assay increases the proportion of pregnant women obtaining HIV-1 results and the uptake of perinatal HIV-1 interventions. METHODS Pregnant women attending public health clinics in Nairobi were offered voluntary counselling and testing for HIV-1. Consenting women were randomly assigned to receive either rapid or conventional HIV-1 testi...

On Approximate Dynamic Inversion

Approximate Dynamic Inversion has been established as a method to control minimum-phase, nonaffine-incontrol systems [1]. In this report, we re-state the main results of [1], clarify some minor notational errors, and prove the same results in an expanded form. In the large, the main results of [1] still stand. The development follows [1] closely, and no novelty is claimed herein. The purpose of...

New results on the modified proximal point algorithm

We present several strong convergence results for the modified proximal point algorithm xn+1 = αnu + (1 − αn)Jβnxn + en (n = 0, 1, . . .; u, x0 ∈ H given, and Jβn = (I + βnA) −1, for a maximal monotone operator A) in a real Hilbert space, under new sets of conditions on αn ∈ (0, 1) and βn ∈ (0,∞). These conditions are weaker than those known to us and our results extend and improve some recent ...

Complexity of hierarchically and 1-dimensional periodically specified problems I: Hardness results

We study the complexity of various combinatorial problems when instances are speci ed using one of the following succinct speci cations: (1) the 1-dimensional nite periodic narrow speci cations (denoted 1-FPN-speci cations) of Ford et al. and Wanke [FF58, Wa93]; (2) the 1-dimensional nite periodic narrow speci cations with explicit boundary conditions (denoted 1-FPN(BC)-speci cations) of Gale [...

New results in extremal problems with polynomials

In this paper we give some new results in extremal problems with polynomials which are generalization of some results of F. Locher. 2000 Mathematical Subject Classification: 26D15, 65D32 In [6] F. Locher studies some extremal problems for semidefinition polynomials (nenegative or nepositive) with the dominant coefficient equal to 1. For this he uses the quadrature formulae with high algebraical...
