Studying reionization with the next generation of Ly emitter

چکیده
We study the prospects for constraining the ionized fraction of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z > 6 with the next generation of large Lyα emitter surveys. We make predictions for the upcoming Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Lyα survey and a hypothetical spectroscopic survey performedwith the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Considering various scenarios where the observed evolution of the Lyα luminosity function of Lyα emitters at z > 6 is explained partly by an increasingly neutral IGM and partly by intrinsic galaxy evolution, we show how clustering measurements will be able to distinguish between these scenarios. We find that the HSC survey should be able to detect the additional clustering induced by a neutral IGM if the global IGM neutral fraction is greater than∼20 per cent at z= 6.5. If measurements of the Lyα equivalent widths (EWs) are also available, neutral fractions as small as 10 per cent may be detectable by looking for correlation between the EW and the local number density of objects. In this case, if it should turn out that the IGM is significantly neutral at z = 6.5 and the intrinsic EW distribution is relatively narrow, the observed EWs can also be used to construct a map of the locations and approximate sizes of the largest ionized regions. For the JWST survey, the results appear a bit less optimistic. Since such surveys probe a large range of redshifts, the effects of the IGM will be mixed up with any intrinsic galaxy evolution that is present, making it difficult to disentangle the effects. However, we show that a survey with the JWST will have a possibility of observing a large group of galaxies at z ∼ 7, which would be a strong indication of a partially neutral IGM.

Probing beyond the Epoch of Hydrogen Reionization with 21 Centimeter Radiation
We use numerical simulations of hydrogen reionization by stellar sources in the context of ΛCDM cosmogonies to investigate the 21 (1+ z) cm radio signal expected from the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the epoch of reionization breakthrough at redshift zion. Two reionization scenarios are analyzed in details: an ‘early reionization’ case with zion ≈ 13, consistent with the recent d...
متن کاملSimulating Cosmic Reionization at Large Scales I: the Geometry of Reionization
We present the first large-scale radiative transfer simulations of cosmic reionization, in a simulation volume of (100 hMpc). This is more than a 2 orders of magnitude improvement over previous simulations. We achieve this by combining the results from extremely large, cosmological, N-body simulations with a new, fast and efficient code for 3D radiative transfer, C-Ray, which we have recently d...
متن کاملCross-correlation studies as a probe of reionization physics
The process of reionization is now believed to have proceeded in an orchestrated manner beginning with UV photons emitted by high redshift galaxies containing a large fraction of Population III stars carving out ionised regions around them. The physics during this era can be studied with a combination of redshifted 21-cm spin-flip transition tracing neutral hydrogen gas, IR emission from massiv...
متن کاملThe 21cm Power Spectrum After Reionization
We discuss the 21cm power spectrum (PS) following the completion of reionization. In contrast to the reionization era, this PS is proportional to the PS of mass density fluctuations, with only a small modulation due to fluctuations in the ionization field on scales larger than the mean-free-path of ionizing photons. We derive the form of this modulation, and demonstrate that its effect on the 2...
متن کاملRadio views of cosmic reionization
We use numerical simulations of cosmic reionization and radiative processes related to the HI 21 cm emission line to produce synthetic radio maps as seen by next generation telescopes that will operate at low radio frequencies (e.g. LOFAR). Two different scenarios, in which the end of reionization occurs early (z ≈ 13) or late (z ≈ 8) depending on the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of the first st...
