چکیده

Energy-Efficient Medium Access (E-MAC) protocols duty cycling the radio transceiver typically trade off energy-efficiency versus classical quality of service (QoS) parameters (throughput, latency, reliability). Today’s EMAC protocols are able to deliver little amounts of data with a low energy footprint, but introduce severe restrictions with respect to throughput and latency. Regrettably, they yet fail to adapt to varying traffic load at run-time. This paper studies the Maximally Traffic-Adaptive MAC protocol MaxMAC, which targets at achieving maximal adaptability to variable traffic conditions at run-time. By thoroughly analyzing the performance of MaxMAC in a series of distributed experiments, the paper conveys that under variable traffic conditions, MaxMAC effectively combines the advantages of energy unconstrained CSMA (high throughput, high PDR, low latency) with those of classical E-MAC protocols (high energy-efficiency). Practical Experiences and Design Considerations on Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this chapter, the practical and experimental aspects of medium access control protocol design for wireless sensor networks are discussed. We outline the basic design principles of medium access control procedures and the general development trends from the perspective of real world implementations. We take into account especially energy consumption and latency requirements. We share our expe...

Traffic Priority-Aware Adaptive Slot Allocation for Medium Access Control Protocol in Wireless Body Area Network

Biomedical sensors (BMSs) monitor the heterogeneous vital signs of patients. They have diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements including reduced collision, delay, loss, and energy consumption in the transmission of data, which are non-constrained, delay-constrained, reliability-constrained, and critical. In this context, this paper proposes a traffic priority-aware adaptive slot allocatio...

Preliminary Discussion on Globally Prioritized Medium Access for Multi-Channel Wireless Systems

We discuss the development of a simple globally prioritized multi-channel medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless networks. This protocol provides “hard” pre-run-time real-time guarantees to sporadic message streams, exploits a very large fraction of the capacity of all channels for “hard” real-time traffic and also makes it possible to fully utilize the channels with non real-time tr...
