Identification by Auxiliary Instrumental Sets in Linear Structural Equation Models

چکیده
We extend graph-based identification methods for linear models by allowing background knowledge in the form of externally evaluated parameters. Such information could be obtained, for example, from a previously conducted randomized experiment, from substantive understanding of the domain, or even from another identification technique. To incorporate such information systematically, we propose the addition of auxiliary variables to the model, which are constructed so that certain paths will be conveniently cancelled. This cancellation allows the auxiliary variables to help conventional methods of identification (e.g., single-door criterion, instrumental variables, half-trek criterion) and model testing (e.g., d-separation, over-identification). Moreover, by iteratively alternating steps of identification and adding auxiliary variables, we can improve the power of existing identification and model testing methods, even without additional knowledge. We operationalize this general approach for instrumental sets (a generalization of instrumental variables) and show that the resulting procedure subsumes the most general identification method for linear systems known to date. We further discuss the application of this new operation in the tasks of model testing and zidentification.

Incorporating Knowledge into Structural Equation Models Using Auxiliary Variables
In this paper, we extend graph-based identification methods by allowing background knowledge in the form of non-zero parameter values. متن کاملIdentification and Model Testing in Linear Structural Equation Models using Auxiliary Variables
We developed a novel approach to identification and model testing in linear structural equation models (SEMs) based on auxiliary variables (AVs), which generalizes a widely-used family of methods known as instrumental variables. The identification problem is concerned with the conditions under which causal parameters can be uniquely estimated from an observational, non-causal covariance matrix....
متن کاملGraphical Tools for Linear Structural Equation Modeling
This paper surveys graphical tools developed in the past three decades that are applicable to linear structural equation models (SEMs). These tools permit researchers to answer key research questions by simple path-tracing rules, even for highly complex models. They include parameter identification, causal effect identification, regressor selection, selecting instrumental variables, finding tes...
متن کاملIdentification of Causal Effects in Linear SEMs using the Instrumental Variable Function
In this paper, we discuss the problem of identification of causal effects in linear Structural Equation Models (SEMs) based on causal diagrams. The two main methods for solving this problem are algebraic methods, which attempts to solve the set of simultaneous equations based on Wright’s method of path analysis, and graphical methods, which tests for certain graphical criteria in the causal dia...
متن کاملStructural Damage Identification of Plate Structures based on Frequency Response Function and Natural Frequencies
In this paper, a structural damage identification method (SDIM) is developed for plate-like structures. This method is derived using dynamic equation of undamaged/damaged plate, in which local change in flexural rigidity is characterized utilizing a damage distribution function. The SDIM requires to modal data in the intact state and frequency response of damage state where most of vibration ba...
