چکیده
The Asynchronous t-Step Approximation for Scheduling Batch Flow Systems David R. Grimsman Department of Computer Science, BYU Master of Science Heap models in the max-plus algebra are interesting dynamical systems that can be used to model a variety of tetris-like systems, such as batch flow shops for manufacturing models. Each heap in the model can be identified with a single product to manufacture. The objective is to manufacture a group of products in such an order so as to minimize the total manufacturing time. Because this scheduling problem reduces to a variation of the Traveling Salesman Problem (known to be NP-complete), the optimal solution is computationally infeasible for many real-world systems. Thus, a feasible approximation method is needed. This work builds on and expands the existing heap model in order to more effectively solve the scheduling problems. Specifically, this work: 1. Further characterizes the admissible products to these systems. 2. Further characterizes sets of admissible products. 3. Presents a novel algorithm, the asynchronous t-step approximation, to approximate these systems. 4. Proves error bounds for the system approximation, and show why these error bounds are better than the existing approximation.

Model approximation for batch flow shop scheduling with fixed batch sizes
Batch flow shops model systems that process a variety of job types using a fixed infrastructure. This model has applications in several areas including chemical manufacturing, building construction, and assembly lines. Since the throughput of such systems depends, often strongly, on the sequence in which they produce various products, scheduling these systems becomes a problem with very practic...
متن کاملBit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...
متن کاملParticle swarm optimization for minimizing total earliness/tardiness costs of two-stage assembly flowshop scheduling problem in a batched delivery system
This paper considers a two-stage assembly flow shop scheduling problem. When all parts of each product are completed in the first stage, they are assembled into a final product on an assembly machine in the second stage. In order to reduce the delivery cost, completed products can be held until completion of some other products to be delivered in a same batch. The proposed problem addresses sch...
متن کاملElectromagnetism-like algorithm for fuzzy flow shop batch processing machines scheduling to minimize total weighted earliness and tardiness
In this paper, we study a flow shop batch processing machines scheduling problem. The fuzzy due dates are considered to make the problem more close to the reality. The objective function is taken as the weighted sum of fuzzy earliness and fuzzy tardiness. In order to tackle the given problem, we propose a hybrid electromagnetism-like (EM) algorithm, in which the EM is hybridized with a diversi...
متن کاملBatch Scheduling in Flexible Flow Shop
In this paper, the problem of batch scheduling in a flexible flow shop environment is studied. It is assumed that machines in some stages are able to process a number of jobs simultaneously. The applications of this problem can be found in various industries including spring and wire manufacturing and in auto industry. A mixed integer programming formulation of the problem is presented and it i...
