Total mercury (T-Hg) in Anomalocardia brasiliana (Mollusca) under different biological and environmental conditions

چکیده
The objective was to determine the spatial-temporal distribution of total mercury (T-Hg) bioavailability at the Goiana Estuary using Anomalocardia brasiliana as model organism. Two seasons (rainy in February and dry in August), three habitats of the tidal flats (upper, middle and lower) and two size classes (<20 mm and >20 mm) were considered. In addition, depurated and non-depurated samples were tested. Individuals (N = 600) were pooled in samples representing the combinations of the above situations. T-Hg in the tissues of the pooled samples of A. brasiliana from Goiana Estuary varied from 0.06 and 0.18 μg g dry weight. Significant differences occurred between treatments (P < 0.05). In average (10-30%), after depuration T-Hg concentrations decreased, especially at the tidal flat areas most exposed to tidal variations (upper and middle). There were no significant differences between seasons or size classes.

Reproductive cycle of Anomalocardia brasiliana (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Veneridae) in the estuary of the Cachoeira River, Ilhéus, Bahia.
The aim of this study was to characterize the reproductive cycle of Anomalocardia brasiliana, typical of the estuarine region of the Cachoeira River, Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. For this purpose, 20 specimens were collected biweekly between August 2005 and August 2006 on an intertidal bank (14º 48' 23" S and 39º 02' 47" W). The animals were measured on the anteroposterior axis (length), examined mac...

Background: The Present study was carried out to track and calculate Biomagnification Factor (BMF) of total mercury (T-Hg) between two different trophic levels (i.e., plankton and a planktivorous fish) in a fresh water grazing food chain. Methods: Experimental organisms were planktonic biomass and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) as a planktivorous fish. Silver carp samples were obt...
متن کاملPopulation structure of the bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana, (Gmelin, 1791) in the semi-arid estuarine region of northeastern Brazil.
For several decades, the bivalve mollusk Anomalocardia brasiliana has been extracted in estuarine areas in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. However, information on both dynamics and abundance of their populations are missing. In this context, the present study, therefore, investigated several aspects of the population structure of A. brasiliana on beaches near the estuary of the Apo...

Spatial and temporal density and biomass of the infaunal mollusk Anomalocardia flexuosa (Linnaeus, 1767) evaluated a tidal plain at Goiana estuary (Northeast Brazil). Three hundred and sixty core samples were taken during an annual cycle from three intertidal habitats (A, B and C). Shell ranged from 2.20 to 28.48 mm (15.08 ± 4.08 mm). Recruitment occurred more intensely from January to March. T...
