Jitter Analysis of CBR Streams in Multimedia Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
The performance of real time applications such as video and voice streams relies on packet delay jitter. Large delay jitter causes buffer overflow or underflow at the receiver end and the user encounters interrupts. The delay jitter is mainly due to the perturbation of background traffic in the bottleneck router. Fulton and Li 1121 provide an analytical approximation for the tirst-order and second-order statistics of delay jitter. However, their analysis is based on a Markovian model of the hackground traffic, which is not quite suitable for Internet traffic and requires lots of computational effort. We propose an efficient method to predict the jitter variance of a CBR (constant-bit rate) connection based on the wavelet model of the background traffic. The wavelet analysis extracts the statistical properties of background traffic and the analysis result can be used to predict an upper hound for the jitter variance of the CBR connection. | Constant Bit Rate (CBR) traac is expected to be a major source of traac in high-speed networks. Such sources may have stringent delay and loss requirements and in many cases, they should be delivered exactly as they were generated. A simple delay priority scheme will bound the cell delay and jitter for CBR streams, so that in the network switches, CBR traac will only compete with other CBR tr...

متن کاملJitter Detection for Connection-Level and Packet-Level QoS support in Mobile Multimedia Networks
Multimedia traffic which are generally VBR in nature require efficient adaptive resource allocation schemes when supported over Mobile Networks. Admission control schemes that satisfy the desired/guaranteed QoS for multimedia applications under different traffic loads to achieve high utilization need to be designed. Packet level QoS parameters include delay, packet loss probability and jitter w...
متن کاملPractical Considerations for Smoothing Multimedia TraÆc Transported over Packet-Switched Networks
The transport of multimedia streams over packet-switched networks often involves a preprocessing to smooth the variable bit-rate nature of the streams to achieve higher network utilization. By examining the smoothing procedure and its e ects on an end-to-end basis, we identify critical points that should be taken into account by any smoothing algorithm. Such issues include the packet delay vari...
