Many-valued judgment aggregation: Characterizing the possibility/impossibility boundary
نویسندگان
چکیده
A general model of judgment aggregation is presented in which judgments on propositions are not binary but come in degrees. The primitives of the model are a set of propositions, an entailment relation, and a “triangular norm” which establishes a lower bound on the degree to which a proposition is true whenever it is entailed by a set of propositions. Under standard assumptions, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the collective judgments to be both deductively closed and free from veto power. This condition says that the triangular norm used to establish the lower bound must contain a zero divisor. ∗We are extremely grateful to Franz Dietrich, Christian Hellwig, Maurice Salles and two referees for their helpful comments and suggestions. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 10th International Meeting of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare, Moscow, July 2010, and in seminars at the Paris School of Economics and the Université de Caen. We are grateful to the participants for their comments. متن کاملAlgebraic Logic view on Judgment Aggregation ?
In the present paper, we propose Abstract Algebraic Logic (AAL) as a general logical framework for Judgment Aggregation. Our main contribution is a generalization of Herzberg’s algebraic approach to characterization results on judgment aggregation and propositionalattitude aggregation, characterizing certain Arrovian classes of aggregators as Boolean algebra and MV-algebra homomorphisms, respec...

متن کاملIndependence in judgment aggregation
Judgment aggregation is a rapidly developing research area in economics which attracts the interest of several fields, such as law, political science and philosophy [3]. It studies how the individual opinions of an agent, which are opinions on logically interconnected propositions, can be mapped into a collective judgment on the same propositions. Dietrich and List showed that judgment aggregat...
متن کاملAggregation of Non-Binary Evaluations∗
We study an aggregation problem in which a society has to determine its position on each of several issues, based on the positions of the members of the society on those issues. There is a prescribed set of feasible evaluations, i.e., permissible combinations of positions on the issues. The binary case of this problem, where only two positions are allowed on each issue, is by now quite well und...
