چکیده

Human beings interact with the environment through different modalities, i.e. perceptions and actions. Different perceptions as view, audition or proprioception for example, are picked up by different spatially separated sensors. They are processed in the cortex by dedicated brain areas, which are self-organized, so that spatially close neurons are sensitive to close stimuli. However, the processings of these perceptive flows are not isolated. On the contrary, they are constantly interacting, as illustrated by the McGurk effect. When the phonetic stimulus /ba/ is presented simultaneously with a lip movement corresponding to a /ga/, people perceive a /da/, which does not correspond to any of the stimuli. Merging several stimuli into one multimodal perception reduces the ambiguities and the noise of each perception. This is an essential mechanism of the cortex to interact with the environment. The aim of this article is to propose a model for the assembling of modalities, inspired by the biological properties of the cortex. We have modified the Bienenstock Cooper Munro (BCM) rule to include it in a model that consists of interacting maps of multilayer cortical columns. Each map is able to self-organize thanks to a continuous decentralized and local learning modulated by a high level signal. By assembling different maps corresponding to different modalities, our model creates a multimodal context which is used as a modulating signal and thus it influences the self-organization of each map.

Unlearning in the BCM Learning Rule for Plastic Self-organization in a Multi-modal Architecture

An agent moving in a real environment perceives it by numerous noisy sensors which provide some high dimensionality data with unknown topology. In order to interact in this complex and changing environment, according to the active perception theory, the agent needs to learn the correlations between its actions and the changes they induce in the environment. In the perspective of a bio-inspired ...

Towards Emerging Multimodal Cognitive Representations from Neural Self-Organization

The integration of multisensory information plays a crucial role in autonomous robotics. In this work, we investigate how robust multimodal representations can naturally develop in a self-organized manner from co-occurring multisensory inputs. We propose a hierarchical learning architecture with growing self-organizing neural networks for learning human actions from audiovisual inputs. Associat...

Receptive field formation in natural scene environments: comparison of kurtosis, skewness, and the quadratic form of BCM

We study several statistically and biologically motivated learning rules using the same visual environment and neuronal architecture. This allows us to concentrate on the feature extraction and neuronal coding properties of these rules. We find that the quadratic form of the BCM rule behaves in a manner similar to a kurtosis maximization rule when the distribution contains kurtotic directions, ...

A New Method to Improve Automated Classification of Heart Sound Signals: Filter Bank Learning in Convolutional Neural Networks

Introduction: Recent studies have acknowledged the potential of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in distinguishing healthy and morbid samples by using heart sound analyses. Unfortunately the performance of CNNs is highly dependent on the filtering procedure which is applied to signal in their convolutional layer. The present study aimed to address this problem by a...

Receptive Field Formation in Natural Scene Environments: Comparison of Single Cell Learning Rules

We study several statistically and biologically motivated learning rules using the same visual environment: one made up of natural scenes and the same single-cell neuronal architecture. Included in these rules are kurtosis and skewness maximization, the quadratic form of the Bienenstock-Cooper...
