چکیده

This paper will explore the feasibility of applying visual gestures in conjunction with commoditized optic sensor technology to mouse interfaces. To that end, the Microsoft Kinect was used. This can be considered as an implementation detail however for the most part. A Kinect-controllable desktop simulator capable of comprehending visual gestures was developed for usability testing. The goal of the simulator is to provide users with a set of use cases they are likely to encounter when interfacing with desktop GUIs. The simulator and its visual gesture mechanisms were put to test in a field experiment involving 11 participants. From these experiments, metrics such as perceived level of user-friendliness were distilled and compared to the mouse alternative. From a functional point of view, the results of these experiments were generally in favor of the mouse. In some cases however, participants have placed visual gestures on an equal footing as mouse interfacing. In such cases, participants found visual gestures to be different, ‘cool’ and ‘fun to work with’. Even though the focal point of this paper remains largely at the usability aspect of visual gestures, a significant amount of effort has gone into getting the Kinect to work on a PC as well. Consequently, this paper will also touch on some of the caveats one is likely to encounter when trying to get the Kinect to work on a PC.

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition

With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

P129: Use of Stem Cells to Regenerate Degenerative Optic Nerve

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the ability to convert to different types of cells and after dividing, they can produce their own cells or other cells. Axons of the retinal ganglion cells, from the optic nerve. These cells lose the ability to regenerate themselves before birth. Optic nerve degeneration can result from various causes including increased intraocular pressure, comp...

A non-contact mouse for surgeon-computer interaction.

We have developed a system that uses computer vision to replace standard computer mouse functions with hand gestures. The system is designed to enable non-contact human-computer interaction (HCI), so that surgeons will be able to make more effective use of computers during surgery. In this paper, we begin by discussing the need for non-contact computer interfaces in the operating room. We then ...

Fiber - Optic Sensing of Linear Thermal Expansion (RESEARCH NOTES)

The use of a LED fiber-optic sensor to measure displacement and linear thermal expansion is described. It has a sensitivity of about 0.6 mV/mm, a resolution of 1.25 mm, and a dynamic rang of 400 mm for displacement measurements. For thermal expansion, it shows a sensitivity of about 3.5 mV/C, and the experimental linear expansion values are in agreement with those calculated. The reported senso...
