Two Adaptive Hybrid Cache Coherency Protocols
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present and evaluate adaptive, hybrid cache coherence protocols for bus-based, shared-memory multiprocessors. Such protocols are motivated by the observation that sharing patterns vary substantially between di erent programs and even cache blocks within the same program. Performance measurements across a range of parallel applications indicate that the adaptive protocols we present perform well compared to both Write-Invalidate and Write-Update protocols.

Adaptive Cache Coherency for Detecting Migratory Shared
Parallel programs exhibit a small number of distinct data-sharing patterns. A common data-sharing pattern, migratory access, is characterized by exclusive read and write access by one processor at a time to a shared datum. We describe a family of adaptive cache coherency protocols that dynamically identify migratory shared data in order to reduce the cost of moving them. The protocols use a sta...
متن کاملTime Domain Performance Evaluation of Adaptive Hybrid Cache Coherence Protocols
Abstruct -Adaptive hybrid cache coherence protocols use both the write-invalidate mechanism and the write-update mechanism to maintain coherence among copies of data objects. Each of these protocols implements a decision function that chooses the appropriate mechanism in order to improve their performance. I n most existing solutions, decision functions are based on communication traffic. Moreo...
متن کاملAutomatic Generation of Veri able Cache Coherence
Performance modelling and veriication are vital steps in the development cycle of any cache coherency protocol. Two separate models are usually required to perform each analysis step and as protocols become increasingly complex each can become correspondingly unwieldy. We examine how stochastic process algebra can be used to describe cache coherency protocols in such a way as to allow both the ...
متن کاملPiggyback Server Invalidation for Proxy Cache Coherency
We present a piggyback server invalidation (PSI) mechanism for maintaining stronger cache coherency in Web proxy caches while reducing overall costs. The basic idea is for servers to piggyback on a reply to a proxy client, the list of resources that have changed since the last access by the client. The proxy client invalidates cached entries on the list and can extend the lifetime of entries no...
متن کاملA General Adaptive Cache Coherency-Replacement Scheme for Distributed Systems
We propose an adaptive cache coherence-replacement scheme for distributed systems that is based on several criteria about the system and applications, with the objective of optimizing the distributed cache system performance. We examine different distributed platforms (shared memory systems, distributed memory systems, and web proxy cache systems) and the potential of incorporating coherency-re...
