Adaptation of the Skeletal System during Long-duration Spaceflight Running Title: Skeletal Adaptation in Space

چکیده
This review will highlight evidence from crew members flown on space missions >90 days to suggest that the adaptations of the skeletal system to mechanical unloading may predispose crew members to an accelerated onset of osteoporosis after return to Earth. By definition, osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder − characterized by low bone mineral density and structural deterioration − that reduces the ability of bones to resist fracture under the loading of normal daily activities. “Involutional” or agerelated osteoporosis is readily recognized as a syndrome afflicting the elderly population because of the insipid and asymptomatic nature of bone loss that does not typically manifest as fractures until after age 1 https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20080014098 2017-09-14T00:49:53+00:00Z

Skeletal muscle unweighting: spaceflight and ground-based models.
Long-term manned spaceflight requires that flight crews be exposed to extended periods of unweighting of antigravity skeletal muscles. This exposure will result in adaptations in these muscles that have the potential to debilitate crew members on return to increased gravity environments. Therefore, the development of countermeasures to prevent these unwanted adaptations is an important requirem...
متن کاملSkeletal effects of long-duration head-down bed rest.
INTRODUCTION Skeletal unloading during spaceflight causes regional loss of bone mineral density (BMD), primarily in the spine and lower body regions. This loss of skeletal mass could adversely affect crew health during and after spaceflight and jeopardize mission success. Bed rest has long been used as a spaceflight analog to study the effects of disuse on many body systems, including the skele...
متن کاملIbuprofen administration during endurance training cancels running-distance-dependent adaptations of skeletal muscle in mice.
Exercise training induces many adaptations in skeletal muscle, representative examples of which include an increase in the IIa myofibre and an increase in the capillary-to-fibre ratio (C:F ratio). Moreover, these phenomena are thought to be dependent on running distance. Ibuprofen is one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is often used as an analgesic, but its effect on skeletal muscle a...
متن کاملAltered Venous Function during Long-Duration Spaceflights
Aims: Venous adaptation to microgravity, associated with cardiovascular deconditioning, may contribute to orthostatic intolerance following spaceflight. The aim of this study was to analyze the main parameters of venous hemodynamics with long-duration spaceflight. Methods: Venous plethysmography was performed on 24 cosmonauts before, during, and after spaceflights aboard the International Space...
متن کاملBehavioral Health Management of Space Dwelling Groups:
Plans to pursue space expeditionary missions beyond Earth orbit have occasioned renewed concern that crew behavioral health and performance effectiveness, along with spacecraft habitability, will present major challenges to the success of spaceflight initiatives involving unprecedented increases in time and distance on interplanetary voyages. A programmed environment methodological approach tha...
