Representing the Umls as an Oodb: Modeling Issues and Advantages Design: an Object-oriented Database Representation Is Utilized to Represent the Two Major

چکیده
Objective: The Uniied Medical Language System (UMLS) designed by NLM combines many well established authoritative medical informatics terminologies in one knowledge representation system. Such a resource is very valuable to the healthcare community and industry. However, the UMLS is very large and complex and poses serious comprehension problems for users and maintenance personnel. We present a representation to support the comprehension and navigation of the UMLS. components of the UMLS, the Metathesaurus and the Semantic Network, as a uniied system. The semantic types of the Semantic Network are modeled as semantic type classes. Intersection classes are deened to model concepts of multiple semantic types which are removed from the semantic type classes. Results: We present examples of how the intersection classes help expose omissions of concepts , highlight errors of semantic type classiication, and uncover ambiguities of concepts in the UMLS. The resulting UMLS OODB schema is deeper and more reened than the Semantic Network since intersection classes are introduced. The Metathesaurus is classiied into a larger number of mutually exclusive, uniform sets of concepts. The schema improves the comprehension and navigation of the Metathesaurus. Conclusions: The UMLS OODB schema supports the comprehension and navigation of the Metathesaurus. It also supports exposing and resolving modeling problems in the UMLS.

متن کاملA Study on Development of a Deductive Object-Oriented Database and Its Application to Genome Analysis
A deductive object-oriented database (DOOD) is the integration of a deductive database (DDB) and an object-oriented database (OODB). DDB and OODB are next generation databases proposed for overcoming the shortcomings of relational databases (RDB). The DDB is an extension of the RDB. It is based on the rst order predicate logic, and provides a declarative query (and programming) language. An adv...
متن کاملFrameworks for incorporating semantic relationships into object-oriented database systems
A semantic relationship is a data modeling construct that connects a pair of classes or categories and has inherent constraints and other functionalities that precisely reflect the characteristics of the specific relationship in an application domain. Examples of semantic relationships include part-whole, ownership, materialization, and role-of. Such relationships are important in the construct...
متن کاملOODB Design with EER
In contrast to the conventional methodology of object-oriented program design focused on the interaction of objects, object-oriented database design should be based on the representation of objects. We put more emphasis in the application semantics pertinent to the structures of, relationships between, and constraints on objects than operations on the objects. Enhanced Entity-Relationship (EER)...
متن کاملAn OODB Design Methodology with Integrated Modeling
Object-oriented database design usually starts with object-oriented modeling of a database application, followed by transformation into an object-oriented data model for implementation. In this paper, we propose an object-oriented database design methodology. First, we present a conceptual model called the Integrated Object-Process model (IOP model). Then, we give modeling steps and guidelines ...
