Sorting Concentrated Suspensions: Particle Interactions, Emergent Behavior, and Implications for Microfluidic Separations

چکیده
We present results from experiments and simulation developing a better understanding of systems of particles whose dynamics are coupled to each other through external fields (e.g. electric, hydrodynamic) and/or intrinsic properties (e.g. permanent charge). Focusing on a few real world examples, we show that particle-particle interactions lead to emergent behavior that is not seen in single-particle analyses and which has profound implications for the design of separation technologies that operate robustly with real, concentrated samples.

متن کاملRecent advances in microfluidic cell separations.
The isolation and sorting of cells has become an increasingly important step in chemical and biological analyses. As a unit operation in more complex analyses, isolating a phenotypically pure cell population from a heterogeneous sample presents unique challenges. Microfluidic systems are ideal platforms for performing cell separations, enabling integration with other techniques and enhancing tr...
متن کاملInertial Microfluidic Band-pass Separations
This work presents an inertial microfluidic band-pass filter, enabling continuous separation of three sizes of particles or cells with <3μm difference in diameter. The design uses inertial forces to focus particles into two bands along side walls. Two chambers with side outlets are cascaded in series to generate microvortices for continuous band-pass separations. Particles with diameters 23μm, ...
متن کاملIntegrated acoustic and magnetic separation in microfluidic channels.
With a growing number of cell-based biotechnological applications, there is a need for particle separation systems capable of multiparameter separations at high purity and throughput, beyond what is presently offered by traditional methods including fluorescence activated cell sorting and column-based magnetic separation. Toward this aim, we report on the integration of microfluidic acoustic an...
