Near-Optimal Stochastic Threshold Group Testing

چکیده
We formulate and analyze a stochastic threshold group testing problem motivated by biological applications. Here a set of n items contains a subset of d n defective items. Subsets (pools) of the n items are tested – the test outcomes are negative, positive, or stochastic (negative or positive with certain probabilities that might depend on the number of defectives being tested in the pool), depending on whether the number of defective items in the pool being tested are fewer than the lower threshold l, greater than the upper threshold u, or in between. The goal of a stochastic threshold group testing scheme is to identify the set of d defective items via a “small” number of such tests. In the regime that l = o(d) we present schemes that are computationally feasible to design and implement, and require near-optimal number of tests (significantly improving on existing schemes). Our schemes are robust to a variety of models for probabilistic threshold group testing.

Optimal flexible capacity in newsboy problem under stochastic demand and lead-time
In this paper, we consider a newsvendor who is going to invest on dedicated or flexible capacity, our goal is to find the optimal investment policy to maximize total profit while the newsvendor faces uncertainty in lead time and demand simultaneously. As highlighted in literature, demand is stochastic, while lead time is constant. However, in reality lead time uncertainty decreases newsvendor's...
متن کاملA Multi-Stage Single-Machine Replacement Strategy Using Stochastic Dynamic Programming
In this paper, the single machine replacement problem is being modeled into the frameworks of stochastic dynamic programming and control threshold policy, where some properties of the optimal values of the control thresholds are derived. Using these properties and by minimizing a cost function, the optimal values of two control thresholds for the time between productions of two successive nonco...
متن کاملEstimating unobservable signal by Markovian noise induction When noise helps in Statistics!
A sub threshold signal is transmitted through a channel and may be detected when some noise – with known structure and proportional to some level – is added to the data. There is an optimal noise level, called of stochastic resonance, that corresponds to the minimum variance of the estimators in the problem of recovering unobservable signals. For several noise structures it has been shown the e...

The integration of marketing and demand with logistics and inventories (supply side of companies) may cause multiple improvements; it can revolutionize the management of the revenue of rental companies, hotels, and airlines. In this paper, we develop a multi-objective pricing-inventory model for a retailer. Maximizing the retailer's profit and the service level are the objectives, and shorta...
متن کاملSequential Hypothesis Testing under Stochastic Deadlines
Most models of decision-making in neuroscience assume an infinite horizon, which yields an optimal solution that integrates evidence up to a fixed decision threshold; however, under most experimental as well as naturalistic behavioral settings, the decision has to be made before some finite deadline, which is often experienced as a stochastic quantity, either due to variable external constraint...
