Strategic Voting, Mixed and Runoff Elections: Evidence from Hungary
نویسنده
چکیده
I attempt to quantify strategic voting using the mixed (proportional and plurality) dual ballot election system in Hungary. The main finding is that there is a moderate amount of desertion of “third parties”. The smaller the likelihood of a second round, and the closer the large parties are, the more pronounced the desertion, consistent with a hypothesis of strategic voting. I thank Chishio Furukawa, Brian Knight, Gábor Simonovits and Neil Thakral for their comments.

Majority runoff elections: Strategic voting and Duverger's hypothesis
The majority runoff system is widely used around the world, yet our understanding of its properties and of voters’ behavior is limited. In this paper, we fully characterize the set of strictly perfect voting equilibria in large three-candidate majority runoff elections. Considering all possible distributions of preference orderings and intensities, we prove that only two types of equilibria can...
متن کاملStrategic Voting In British Elections
Strategic Voting In British Elections In this paper we examine the extent to which voters engage in strategic behavior. Our contribution is accounting for the context in which voters have the opportunity to behave in a strategic fashion. We also demonstrate that previous measures of strategic voting significantly underestimated the willingness of voters to engage in strategic behavior when pres...
متن کاملStrategic voting in established and new democracies: Ticket splitting in mixed-member electoral systems
Using Cox’s ’SF-ratio’ (the ratio of the vote won by the ’second loser’ to that of the ’first loser’), we examine strategic voting in mixed-member electoral systems in ten countries and a total of 35 elections. The SF-ratio is a useful indicator of strategic defection from less competitive to more competitive electoral options that is comparable across very diverse country cases. Under conditio...
متن کاملCloseness and Turnout in Runoff Elections
This study aims at contributing to the literature on the effect of political competition on voting turnout. I test the Downsian Closeness Hypothesis (DCH) using data on runoffs elections in Hungary. This research design allows for estimating the effect of expected closeness using the variation of margins in the first round races to avoid the endogeneity problem inherent in ex post measures of c...
متن کاملX THEN X: Manipulation of Same-System Runoff Elections
Do runoff elections, using the same voting rule as the initial election but just on the winning candidates, increase or decrease the complexity of manipulation? Does allowing revoting in the runoff increase or decrease the complexity relative to just having a runoff without revoting? We show that, for both weighted and unweighted voting, every possible answer can be made to hold, even for elect...
