Cyclicity and Stability in Mother-Infant Face-to-Face Interaction: A Comment on Cohn and Tronick (1988)

نویسنده

  • Alan Fogel
چکیده

Cohn and Tronick (1988) found that the onset times of behavioral change in mother-infant face-toface interaction are stochastic rather than periodic. This comment offers an explanation of why thenresult replicates that of Kaye and Fogel (1980), in spite of important differences in how interactive behavior is conceptualized, coded, and treated statistically. Furthermore, it is suggested that stochastic variability in onset times has profound implications for our understanding of the process of mother-infant interaction and of the ways in which infants develop in the context of that interaction.

Mother-Infant Face-to-Face Interaction: Influence is Bidirectional and Unrelated to Periodic Cycles in Either Partner's Behavior

During mother-infant face-to-face interactions, bidirectional influence could be achieved through either the entraining of periodic cycles in the behavior of each partner or through the stochastic organization of behaviors. To determine whether and how bidirectional influence occurs, we used both timeand frequency-domain techniques to study the interactions of 54 mother-infant pairs, 18 each at...

Mother-Infant Face-to-Face Interaction: The Sequence of Dyadic States at 3, 6, and 9 Months

Three untested hypotheses are central to the theory of Brazelton and colleagues about the sequential structure of mother-infant face-to-face interaction: (1) Interactions begin with the mother's positively eliciting her infant's attention; (2) maternal positive expression precedes the onset of infant's positive expression; and (3) when the infant becomes positive, the mother will remain positiv...

Posture and gaze in early motherÿinfant communication: synchronization of developmental trajectories

Weekly laboratory observations of free play for 13 middle-income mother±infant dyads, from 1 to 6 months of age, were used to study the synchronization of developmental trajectories between infant postural position and gaze direction. Mothers sat in a straight-backed chair while holding infants on their laps and were free to adjust the infant's posture. Postural position was coded as upright (s...

Face-to-face interaction between infants with orofacial clefts and their mothers.

Compared mother-infant face-to-face (en face) interaction among 3-month-old infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP), infants with isolated cleft palate (CP), or nonimpaired infants (NI). The Monadic Phase system (Tronick, Als, & Brazelton, 1980) was used to describe patterns of laboratory en face interaction in 116 mother-infant dyads. Diagnostic group comparisons of percentages of monadic phas...

A Comparative Study of Face-to-Face and Nonahal App education on Weight Gain and Mother-Infant Attachment in premature neonatal hospitalized in NICU

Background Supporting the family and educating the parents helps them in taking care of their infants. Recent developments in mobile technology have created many opportunities to enhance people's health and welfare. The purpose of the study was to compare face-to-face education and education through Nonahal mobile app on neonatal weight gain and mother-neonate attachment in the NICU. Method: T...
