چکیده

Oscillatory synchronization of neuronal populations has been proposed to play a role in perceptual integration and attentional processing. However, some conflicting evidence has been found with respect to its causal relevance for sensory processing, particularly when using flickering visual stimuli with the aim of driving oscillations. We tested psychophysically whether the relative phase of gamma frequency flicker (60 Hz) between stimuli modulates well-known facilitatory lateral interactions between collinear Gabor patches (Experiment 1) or crowding of a peripheral target by irrelevant distractors (Experiment 2). Experiment 1 assessed the impact of suprathreshold Gabor flankers on detection of a near-threshold central Gabor target ("Lateral interactions paradigm"). The flanking stimuli could flicker either in phase or in anti-phase with each other. The typical facilitation of target detection was found with collinear flankers, but this was unaffected by flicker phase. Experiment 2 employed a "crowding" paradigm, where orientation discrimination of a peripheral target Gabor patch is disrupted when surrounded by irrelevant distractors. We found the usual crowding effect, which declined with spatial separation, but this was unaffected by relative flicker phase between target and distractors at all separations. These results imply that externally driven manipulations of gamma frequency phase cannot modulate perceptual integration in vision.

Objectives: To investigate the time dynamics and phase relationship with the stimulus of the onset/offset visual evoked potentials (VEPs), P300 and gamma band oscillatory responses to visual (contrast) stimulation. Gamma band oscillatory activity mediates in sensory and cognitive operations, with a role in stimulus-related cortical synchronization, but is reportedly reduced in the time window o...

Differential Roles of Frequency-following and Frequency-doubling Visual Responses Revealed by Evoked Neural Harmonics

Frequency-following and frequency-doubling neurons are ubiquitous in both striate and extrastriate visual areas. However, responses from these two types of neural populations have not been effectively compared in humans because previous EEG studies have not successfully dissociated responses from these populations. We devised a light-dark flicker stimulus that unambiguously distinguished these ...

How Long Depends on How Fast—Perceived Flicker Dilates Subjective Duration

How do humans perceive the passage of time and the duration of events without a dedicated sensory system for timing? Previous studies have demonstrated that when a stimulus changes over time, its duration is subjectively dilated, indicating that duration judgments are based on the number of changes within an interval. In this study, we tested predictions derived from three different accounts de...

Title Synchronous Information Presented in 40-hz Flicker Enhances Visual Feature Binding Figure Coding at 40 Hz Presented in 40 Hz Flicker Enhances Visual Feature Binding

Recent neurophysiological studies (e.g. Eckhorn et al. 1994; Engel et al., 1990; Gray & Singer, 1989; Gray et al., 1990; Kreiter & Singer, 1992) have encouraged speculation that the synchronization of spatially distributed neural assemblies (at around 40 Hz in the neocortex) is responsible for the ‘binding’ of discrete stimulus components into coherent ‘wholes’ during visual object perception (...
