Resolution based decision procedures for subclasses of first-order logic

چکیده

This thesis studies decidable fragments of first-order logic which are relevant to the field of nonclassical logic and knowledge representation. We show that refinements of resolution based on suitable liftable orderings provide decision procedures for the subclasses E+, K, and DK of firstorder logic. By the use of semantics-based translation methods we can embed the description logic ALB and extensions of the basic modal logic K into fragments of first-order logic. We describe various decision procedures based on ordering refinements and selection functions for these fragments and show that a polynomial simulation of tableaux-based decision procedures for these logics is possible. In the final part of the thesis we develop a benchmark suite and perform an empirical analysis of various modal theorem provers.

Using Resolution as Decision Procedure

This cumulative habilitation thesis is based on five papers related to resolution decision procedures. Resolution is a well-known technique for first-order theorem proving. It is complete, but it does not terminate in general, when there exists no proof. In many cases, resolution can be modified in such a way that it becomes a decision procedure for certain subclasses of first-order logic. We h...

A Decomposition Rule for Decision Procedures by Resolution-Based Calculi

Resolution-based calculi are among the most widely used calculi for theorem proving in first-order logic. Numerous refinements of resolution are nowadays available, such as e.g. basic superposition, a calculus highly optimized for theorem proving with equality. However, even such an advanced calculus does not restrict inferences enough to obtain decision procedures for complex logics, such as S...

Deciding the guarded fragments by resolution

The guarded fragment is a fragment of first-order logic that has been introduced for two main reasons: First, to explain the good computational and logical behavior of propositional modal logics. Second, to serve as a breeding ground for well-behaved process logics. In this paper we give resolution-based decision procedures for the guarded fragment and for the loosely guarded fragment (sometime...

Deciding Monodic Fragments by Temporal Resolution

In this paper we study the decidability of various fragments of monodic first-order temporal logic by temporal resolution. We focus on two resolution calculi, namely, monodic temporal resolution and finegrained temporal resolution. For the first, we state a very general decidability result, which is independent of the particular decision procedure used to decide the first-order part of the logi...

Paramodulation without Duplication

The resolution (and paramodulation) inference systems are theorem proving procedures for rst-order logic (with equality), but they can run exponentially long for subclasses which have polynomial time decision procedures, as in the case of SLD resolution and the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure, both in the ground case. Specialized methods run in polynomial time, but have not been extended to t...
