Short-Lived Shocks with Long-Lived Impacts? Household Income Dynamics in a Transition Economy

چکیده

It is possible in theory that the persistent poverty that has emerged in many transition economies is due to underlying nonconvexities in the dynamics of household incomes, such that a vulnerable household will never recover from a sufficiently large but short-lived shock to its income. To test the theory we estimate a dynamic panel data model of household incomes with nonlinear dynamics and endogenous attrition. Our estimates on data for Hungary in the 1990s exhibit nonlinearity in the income dynamics. But we do not find evidence of nonconvexities. In general, households bounce back from transient shocks though the process is not rapid.

Estimating long-run equilibrium real exchange rates: short-lived shocks with long-lived impacts on Pakistan

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that affect real exchange rate volatility for Pakistan through the co-integration and error correction model over a 30-year time period, i.e. between 1980 and 2010. The study employed the autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH), generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) and Vector Error Correction model...

Modelling Vulnerability in the UK

In this paper we examine the concept of "vulnerability" (Townsend 1994) within the context of income mobility of the poor. We test for the dynamics of vulnerable households in the UK using Waves 1 12 of the British Household Panel Survey and find that, of three different types of risks that we test for, household-specific shocks and economy-wide aggregate shocks have the greatest impact on cons...
