چکیده

We examine spin vortices in ferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg models with planar anisotropy on two–dimensional lattices. The symmetry properties and the time evolution of vortices built up from spin–coherent states are studied in detail. Although these states show a dispersion typical for wave packets, important features of classical vortices are conserved. Moreover, the results on symmetry properties provide a construction scheme for vortex–like excitations from exact eigenstates, which have a well–controlled time evolution. Our approach works for arbitrary spin length both on triangular and square lattices. PACS numbers: 75.10.Jm, 75.10.Hk

Observation of half-quantum vortices in an exciton-polariton condensate.

Singly quantized vortices have already been observed in many systems, including the superfluid helium, Bose-Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases, and condensates of exciton-polaritons in the solid state. Two-dimensional superfluids carrying spin are expected to demonstrate a different type of elementary excitations referred to as half-quantum vortices, characterized by a pi rotation of t...

Quintet Pairing and Non-abelian Vortex String in Spin-3/2 Cold Atomic Systems

We study the s-wave quintet Cooper pairing phase (Spair = 2) in spin-3/2 cold atomic systems and identify various novel features which do not appear in spin-1/2 pairing systems. A single quantum vortex is shown to be energetically less stable than a pair of half-quantum vortices. The half-quantum vortex exhibits the global analogue of the non-Abelian Alice string and SO(4) Cheshire charge in ga...

Stability of half-quantum vortices in p(x)+ip(y) superconductors.

We consider the stability conditions for half-quantum vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional p{x}+ip{y} superconductor (such as Sr2RuO4 is believed to be). The predicted exotic nature of these excitations has recently attracted much attention, but they have not been observed yet. We emphasize that an isolated half-quantum vortex has a divergent energy cost in the bulk due to its unscreened spin cu...

Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a quenched ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

The spin vortices are shown to be created through the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) mechanism in a quantum phase transition of a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate, when the applied magnetic field is quenched below a critical value. It is shown that the magnetic correlation functions have finite correlation lengths, and magnetizations at widely separated positions grow in random directions, resu...

Hyperbolic spin vortices and textures in exciton-polariton condensates.

From cosmology to the microscopic scales of the quantum world, the study of topological excitations is essential for the understanding of phase conformation and phase transitions. Quantum fluids are convenient systems to investigate topological entities because well-established techniques are available for their preparation, control and measurement. Across a phase transition, a system dramatica...
