چکیده

The very essence of Peircean semiotics is the process through which an object is represented by a sign and creates another sign. This means that Peircean semiotics bas ically constitutes a theory of representation. This implies that the object and the sign cannot be the same and hence sign displacements occur in the cognitive processes. When dividing the Peircean sign types into signs of nature, man and culture, we are able to get a precise idea of the sign displacement that occurs from nature to culture and within culture. In this way, the sign displacement is an elaboration of how we semiotically construct our understanding of our surroundings. The article argues that our understanding of the world is placed only within the Thirdness trichotomy containing Rheme, Dicent sign and Argument. But the sign displacement and thus the semiotic constructivism implies a dynamical perspective and in order to understand this perspective we must take a closer look at Peircean evolution theory. At the center of Peirce's evolution theory is the idea of habit formation and the notion is in fact similar to the interpretant. Based on the similarity between the signs and the different parts of the evolution theory, the article presents a comparative analysis of the sign and evolution theory.

Interactivist naturalization of biosemiotics and Peircean semeiotic

Intention is to show how the concepts of Peircean semeiotic can be transformed to interactivist ones, and what restrictions this transformation brings along to the application of Peircean concepts especially to biosemiotics. The basic interactive re-interpretation of Peircean semeiotic for biosemiotics can be done with three levels of representation. At the first level, the concept of minimal (...

An Evolutionary Idea of Evolution: a Peircean Interpretation of Hybrid-agent Organisazation Model

This paper proposes an evolutionary interpretation of a hybrid-agent organization model. Charles S. Peirce’s conception of evolution, a combination in some Darwinian and Lamarckian ideas, is a key component of the development of such systems trying to cope with evolving data provided by an evolving environment. In Peirce’s conception of evolution, we find at its core the concepts of chance, nat...

Towards Meaningful Information Processing: A unifying representation for Peirce’s sign types

An open problem in AI is the definition of meaningful information processing. That human interpretation and information processing by current computers can be different is well illustrated by Searle’s famous Chinese room argument thought experiment. In this paper we suggest that an answer to the above open problem of AI can be given by introducing a model of information processing which is embe...

Psychosemiotics and its Peircean Foundations

The aims of this article are to outline the nature and scope of psychosemiotics and to highlight its foundations in the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. Psychosemiotics, defined as the study of how humans learn, understand, and use signs, is grounded in the theory of the sign and semiosis as conceived by Peirce. Psychosemiotics addresses representation and meaning in seven signways: l...
